Today me and my mom went to Winn Dixie, and we brought our dogs. She stayed in the car and I went in. When I came out I noticed a dog in the car i had parked in front of. The window was down all the way and the dog was laying in the passenger seat. I live in Florida and it gets extremely hot in the summer, so I called the cops and asked them to do something about it. They said they would send an officer to check out the dog and make sure its ok, so then I left before the officer arrived. Did I do they right thing by calling the cops? Could they really do anything about it?

If you had legitimate concerns, then of course it's all right to call the cops. It's better safe than sorry. You mentioned the car window was down all the way, so if it does get too hot, it's possible for the dog to jump out, I suppose. I personally think it would be best not to leave the dog inside the car, whether windows were open or not. I know I've sat in my car in the summer and it can get unbearably hot and stuffy after a couple of minutes, even with the windows down.
