My cute little (B|TCH) cat scratched the crap out of my arm a few days ago. Sunk her teeth and claws right into the muscle of my forearm and was hanging from me. Needless to say, it got infected. After a $500 doctor bill (no insurance), the infection is clearing up. I am used to eating yogurt with acidophilus to help regenerate the "Good" bacteria in my digestive tract after a course of antiboitics. But since recently becoming vegan, would rather avoid yogurt. Are there any alternatives that are good for re-establishing the natural bugs in our bellies? THanks!!

I just got over some sort of stomach virus, and I also wanted to replenish those healthy bacteria. Let me reassure you that soy yogurt is good. (I don't think it's too funky in flavor, as some soy substitutes are.)

Silk brand soy yogurt, which is available in most grocery stores (in the US, anyway), has the four major live cultures (including acidophilus) that you would find in dairy-based yogurts.

I'm not sure if it's required by law, but most yogurts list their active cultures as part of the ingredients list, or they mention them somewhere on the packaging. So, you should have no problem finding soy yogurt with live cultures, just by checking the labels.

Silk brand comes in several flavors, including vanilla, which is nice if you want to add your own fruits or other flavors. Or eat it plain. (That's my favorite Silk flavor, although the strawberry and blueberry are good too.)

So, yes, there is such a thing as vegan yogurt!

Its a pretty good idea to take the acidophilus pills instead of the yogurt- you get more acidophilus that way, and it seems easier to me. But, you can always eat the yogurt sometimes and then supplement with acidophilus on the days you don't eat it. Just a thought.
