Kind of makes you ask why it didn't go down like this.

Over 100 times have I seen Star Wars, and not a single time think of that did I.

Seriously.

Why didn't they just use the Death Stara device created for the very purpose of destroying planetsto blast through Yavin?

Cheers!

Exactly! Why not use the tool that they'd created to do the job it was intended to do??

The joy of the willing suspension of disbelief.

The parent site looks pretty cool too: www.howitshouldhaveended.com

No, no, no! You've got it all wrong! They couldn't have blown up the planet just like that because it would have exhausted the Death Star's energy supply! Or in any case they couldn't have refilled the energy supply afterwards faster than just 30 seconds. Therefore, it made more sense to wait. And besides, what about the debris from the explosion? It could potentially have obstructed the firing path.

That's a good point-- we don't know how long it takes to charge up the Death Station again after firing. It might take longer than waiting.

I was just watching Star Wars again and I was reminded that the planet Yavin is supposed to be a gas giant. That might be a rational explanation for why they couldn't just destroy it. I imagine destroying a planet like Jupiter would be a much different matter than destroying a planet like Earth.

For you or I, perhaps. Not for a giant, space-based, planet-destroying weapon that emits a giant laser beam.

Seriously, I don't think it would matter what the planet's core is made of.

Plus, I think Vader could probably have just force-choked the planet into rubble if he wanted to.

Obi-Wan allowed himself to be killed, as he was sacrificing himself so that Luke, Leia, Han, Chewie & the droids could escape. He also knew (through his communing with Qui-Gon) that he'd become one with the Force and be able to help Luke more in that manner than he could as a physically old man who was restricted to one physical location.

(this is all just my extrapolation and thoughts)

He knew exactly what he was doing, if you ask me.
