Hi, I'm Rika, I'm 25, and new to Vegetarianism (Ovo-lacto vegetarianism) - I've only finally made the commitment in the past 2 weeks.

I've joined the forum to get support, recipe ideas, and advice on things to avoid, especially during the beginning.

My advance thanks for any help with the a fore mentioned,

Congratulations! I recently made the switch to lacto-vegetarian (since mid april) and so far I don't miss the meat at all, plus I feel better and seem to have more energy! I still eat dairy but no eggs/meat/fish, so when I go out to a restaurant or just shopping, I've found I have to ask a lot of questions and read a lot of labels. Cheese in particular can be cured with animal rennet which is made from the lining of a calf's stomach.

Here is a link to safe cheeses: http://www.livingcrueltyfree.com/200...arian-cheeses/

beyond that, just make sure you eat enough protein, which shouldn't be hard with eggs/fish/dairy. I like to substitute meat with either tofu, tempe, or some form of eggplant or portebello mushroom. Great in sandwiches, stews, chilies, etc. If you find it hard to quit eating meat, try watching some documentaries on how animals are treated in preparation for the slaughterhouse. Pretty bad. Best wishes and good luck!

Welcome! Keep in mind that the beginning is the hardest part, as you realize more and more what things you won't be eating. Over time, any cravings for meat will lessen and you'll start to find that the new vegetarian foods become just as satisfying.

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate the welcome and the support!

So far I've had almost no problems with giving up meat in general, and no real cravings, I'm actually having most difficulty in identifying things in my foods. that I wouldn't have naturally thought of , such as the Animal Rennet in a lot of cheese, and the meat in most stocks).
I'll mostly be about learning what I can eat, what I do like to eat, and how to balance this into my life.

I appreciate your link to the cheeses, Heckishfire, but since I'm Australian, we don't have those selections of cheeses, to the best of my knowledge.
But thank you for the link, I think that it'll be still helpful, especially with their information about make up, because I need to know what's safe for the bunnies and what not
Actually, that'll probably be where I'll have trouble with, make up, soaps, razors, etc - 'everyday' things I use, without thinking of the consequences of.

If anyone could suggest any make up brands that are animal cruelty free, I'd appreciate it, we may have some of the same brands over here - I'm already looking into local registered safe brands.

Thanks again ^_^

Welcome! I'm pretty sure that both Lush and Body Shop don't use animal testing, however some products, such as Body Shop's lip butters, do contain beeswax.
