What do you say to people who accuse you of caring more about animals than people. Esp for those who are animal welfare/rights activists, or donate money to animal welfare organizations?

"That money and/or your effort could be used toward improving conditions for human beings around the world. So you must care more about animals/put animals above people." What is your reply?

Thanks,

Andrey

I've only been "accused" of that a few times and it was always by some dumb-ass who was a shining example of why I do, indeed, care less about people than Animals.

So, "screw off" or something like that, is probably the best answer for me to give them.

People actually say that?

Generally speaking, humans can solve their own problems, or at least alleviate them. Animals, on the other hand, are totally defenseless.

Also, whoever is asking that question is really just prioritizing charities for other people. I have no problem with individuals valuing a specific charity cause more than another, but that doesn't mean you should prioritize charities for others as well.

Well, sometimes I do care about non-human animals more than humans. Humans can be terrible sometimes. XD But think about what factory farming does to the environment. By not contributing to that, aren't we helping humans?

There is the fact that soya or wheat are mainly grown in poorer countries to feed western animals, replacing local agriculture that used to feed people of these countries, hence increasing poverty and famine. (agriculture today could feed much more than the global population - lately i've heard up to 12 billion people - if it was used to feed humans directly, not factory farm animals, and of course if it were properly distributed)
Plus of course the effects on environment, which directly affects us.
Plus the conditions of workers in slaughterhouses (extremely high turnover, physically strenuous job, lots of accidents or diseases/disorders related to the job - carrying of heavy loads, use of knives -, and for some the inability to cope with killing animals).
You could also ask them what THEY do to help humans. Most people don't do any single thing, or at best donate a few pounds/dollars/euros a year to one charity, just to feel good about themselves - even though the rest of the year they buy tons of clothes or other products made in sweatshops and such...

Why is it better to care about humans more than nonhumans?

If the person's being particularly rude, I usually use this one ^. The line "You could be active for human rights" is usually said by people who aren't doing a damned thing to make the world a better place.

And theres all those ****wads who always say "you care *more* about ________ (fill it in with Animals or a particular race of Humans that they don't care for too much) than "us", if you care AT ALL about them.

In other words, for too many humans, caring at all, is caring way too much.
