Ok, I've got another stupid newbie question. You'll get sick of me soon. :p

I went grocery shopping today, and I noticed that Silk, the company that makes lots of varieties of soy milk, also makes a product called "Live! (tm) smoothie", which is described as having "live cultures and Silk soymilk". The ingredients include yogurt cultures. Is that dairy yogurt or soymilk based? I'm trying to figure out if this is vegan.

For that matter, the Silk soymilk container says that all their soymilks are vegan. Is everything from that company vegan or just the soy milk?

I'm a new lacto-ovo veggie, not vegan, so I'm still figuring things out. I bought two of the smoothies, just to try them. I'm actually realizing that this whole vegetarian thing is much easier than I anticipated. Being vegan seems tough, though. You actually have to know what you're doing.

Yes, completely! There are no animal derivatives hidden in any of the ingredients. The lactic acid and live cultures used in Silk soy yogurt come from a vegetable source. All vitamins used to fortify Silk Soymilk are derived from vegetable sources including calcium carbonate that comes from limestone.

It's parent companies White Wave and Dean Foods are not vegan though.

Silk is vegan, yes, but the parent companies aren't. Is this a problem? Personally I don't think there's any reason to avoid a product just because the parent company is not vegan...

Someone just posted this thought in another thread and I think it sort-of applies here too:

Quote:

I think there are no perfect choices in life and we often have to make compromises. I think part of that equation is what sacrifices by us give us the biggest ethical bang for our buck so to speak. At a certain point not only do we get diminishing returns, but we may actually get negative returns by either causing ourselves so much stress we are less functional, or by wasting or time and money that could be better used in more productive ways for the animals.

Thanks for the info! I'm going to take one of those smoothies in my lunch today, so I'll see if I actually like it. Now that can be my only motivation in whether or not to buy them again.

So I tried one of them today. I was impressed by how much it reminded of me of dairy yogurt. I really found it disgusting in exactly the same way. I should have known better. :p

Thats to bad. They do taste a lot like slightly watered down yogurt. If I recall correctly, the peach one is pretty tasty. I'm a big fan of (soy) yogurt though.
