So things have been insane at work. I work night shift front desk at a hotel, and there's usually a breakfast lady who comes in and prepares all of that. So that way, even though our continental breakfast includes animal products galore, I usually don't have to touch any of it.

However the other day, the breakfast lady didn't show up at all, and I had to prepare all of it in order for the guests to have breakfast and not complain. I felt nauseous having to cook eggs and sausages. I didn't even try to cook anything else as I had no idea how to do it.

Then my manager comes in at 7 am. I've made no secret of the fact that I'm vegan, so especially considering that, I would have at least expected a thank you. Instead she was extremely rude to me as I didn't set it up correctly (well duh, besides fresh fruit there is nothing on there I would touch!)

We had a staff meeting later that day, and I was ridiculed as I wouldn't touch the pizza by my coworkers. The general manager was nice about it, and said that she had no idea and would have something to eat next time that I could eat. But then the same manager who was rude while relieving me after I was forced to cook the very products I'm against ridiculed me for my green smoothies that I drink regularly.

At least the breakfast lady who didn't show up was fired for it. But still, why do people give a **** about what others eat? And does anyone else find they get this much grief for choosing to be an ethical person?

Because they are ass holes? I honestly have no idea but I wish they would stop.

And yes all the time. A random stranger asked me what I was drinking and that it "looked gross so it must be healthy", when I was drinking my green smoothie on the bus.

Don't let them get to you, Mia. There's no where you can work that isn't filled with prick employees. They're everywhere

That's awful, sorry to hear you were mocked like that at work. Culturally we have a long way to go regarding choices like diet. Apparently we are supposed to 'relax' and take all the jokes about our choices, but no one in their right mind would make such jokes about someone's religion or other personal/political beliefs.

Yes, I used to get mocked at work too
It sucks, but I tried not to take it personally. People will ridicule anything they deem as different or even threatening. Just remember that you are the better person. When they make fun of you, pull a Billy Corgan and disarm them with a smile.

Wow. Amazing how many people don't realize that healthy is much yummier than greasy!

Nah, not hiding!
Just finished up with my class last week, had finals, and now I've got almost 2 weeks off!

I'm actually tempted to have it out with her this morning when she relieves me at 7 am. It's not just the way she mocks me for being vegan, but also the fact that despite the fact that I am by far the hardest worker here (to the point where I'm usually having to clean up everyone else's messes when I arrive for my shift), I was promised full time when I started here as soon as I started my summer vacation a month ago and I still have yet to see that, she's insisting on giving me 3 shifts one week and 4 the next. Furthermore, she goes out of her way to be rude for me. For example, I have been having to use her ID and password in order to get into the system and do my work, such as checking people in and running the night audit (I work at a hotel). Her password changed, I had to call her to get the new password, she screamed at me for not using my ID which she never gave me despite me asking her repeatedly, but it's actually her fault that I had to call her as I didn't have an ID! I've got bills to pay, and I can't do this on such a limited number of shifts, although I'm wondering if there's even any point in getting another job as I'm leaving the state in about 3 months anyway.

I'm so frustrated.

yes, i find myself constantly having to defend my decision. they didn't care before and now all of a sudden everything i eat gets critiqued.
That's terrible that you have to go through that.
try not to let it get to you too much and just remember that it's not a permanent situation
hope things get better.

I hate when people do that!

I put some poetry as my facebook status (vegan poetry) and my best friend's boyfriend gets so mad at me! He always feel the need to debate my point of view and veganism! He accuses me of not caring about the human race, because I don't kill animals. I don't understand that point of view at all!

EDIT

Update, apparently he unfriended me and then blocked me on Facebook... And then bitched about how much he hates me on his facebook... Wow.
