Hello! My name is Renee, I'm an artist, and I am a very very new member of the world of vegetarianism.

I've always "talked-the-talk," so to speak about animal rights, and not wearing fur, etc etc, and have always had pets. But as an avid foodie, I had a hard time reconsiling my "try any and every meat/body part/dish at least once" with the idea of cruelty-free eating. I couldn't "walk-the-walk."

I had what I call my "Please, Lisa! Don't eat me!" moment a few nights ago over a bowl of pho (Vietnamese spiced beef & noodle soup) in Orlando. I was reading one of those free local magazines on consious eating, and learned a bit about the cruel conditions animals are subjected to, and the effect of meat eating on the environment. I also have a family history rife with obesity, heart disease and cancer on both sides.

Suddenly that delicious bowl of beef looked....well, disgusting.

Which leads me to now. I feel that I'll likely have an edge in my conversion, because a) I do a lot of cooking, and am knowledgeable on different herbs, spices, dressings, vinegars, as well as fruit, veggies, and grains from all over the world, and b) some of my favorite ethnic cuisines - Indian, Middle Eastern, and South East Asian - are FULL of vegetarian options.

So, rather than bemoaning the loss of steak or whatever (never a huge fan of it anyway), I'm actually really, really excited. Happy and looking forward to being healthier, thinner (since I'm tying this in with yoga, swimming, & cardio), more ethical, and more earth concious.

But, again, since I'm new, please forgive me (and feel free to correct) if anything above was phrased wrong, incorrect, etc etc. More than anything, I'm here to learn & make some like-minded online friends!

So, hi!

- Renee

Haha will do =) I mainly would seek suggestions about spicing up vegetables since I hate most of them (I know I know, a vegetarian that hates veggies - LOL) or just more interesting ways to serve them since I'm clueless!

Also I want to ask where the idea for the thread title came from? I have this mental image in my head of someone asking you "If you love carrots so much, why don't you marry one!" and you saying "I will!"

Ok, the carrot thing: it's a line from The Simpsons episode where Lisa becomes a vegetarian (arguably one of the best episodes, line for line, and I highly recommend it to other veggies). Kids are teasing her about her decision, and one girl goes, "Lisa, are you going to marry a carrot?" Deadpan, she responds, "Yes. I'm going to marry a carrot." The kids squeal, and go, "She admitted it!!!" Hysterical.

That's also why I used the term, "my 'Please Lisa! Don't eat me!' moment." She becomes veg after making the connection between the cute lamb @ a petting zoo and the lamb chops @ dinner.

oh, and LOL, Vincent

Welcome to VB. Being veg*n these days is really no sacrifice at all - there are so many wonderful new cookbooks and products available, and foods that used to seem "foreign" are now familiar to nearly everyone. I love living this way!!!

You know, two days before Thanksgiving 2010 I ate my last morsel of meat.
I thought that it was going to be hard to keep up and gave myself maybe a few weeks at the most.
Now? If I go back to meat it is because I made a decision to do so, not because of some craving.

I have tried a few of the recipes listed on this forum and have found some of them to be incredible, I have learned to shop differently, cook differently and feel differently (better)

I hope that you can share some of your favorite recipes with the kids in the class here, Im always looking for new things to try. Ive even been able to keep tofu down in the last month or so.

Welcome to the boards.
