I have been looking up info on yerba mate. The more scientific stuff says that it indeed contains caffeine, that this has been shown time and time again. On the other hand, those who seem to be promoting it (read, selling it) say no, it is a compound similar to caffeine, with all the good with none of the bad of caffeine.

I have nothing against caffeine so it is a moot point for me, but I wanted to mention that what it actually contains is not as clear cut as those promoting it present.

BTW- I am moving this to foods.

when i was in argentina (or was it brazil? there it's called chimarrao) i bought the mate kit with the porongo bowl and the "bomb" and about 2lb of the herb, hehe, it's very cool. but apparently, i don't have it anymore

yerba mate contains caffeine together with other stimulants apparently, that give you other "ups" that hide the "bads" of caffeine. it is said to aid in detox and hangovers. i myself always feel queasy when i drink coffee and also have stomach aches, which doens't happen at all with mate - i think it has some property that relaxes your muscles too, if i'm not mistaken.

anyway, mate is better than coffee, and it tastes much better too

Yerba Mate. I have tried it. I worked in a coffee shop and one of the guys bought some in, brewed it through the espresso machine and mixed it with white chocolate and milk.

the funny thing was, I also worked at an herbal store and we sold the herb. I've also found that more men like yerba mate then women at least in my experience, maybe since the herb is used as a male stimulant..

Aw, too bad. I bet you can find another one, though. My co-op sells them. I think they are very attractive.

My body tolerates caffeine very well. But when I tried yerba mate, I felt like I had taken a lot of speed. My heart raced, and I felt jittery and queasy. I know I'm not the only one who is affected this way. It's not for everyone. But I'm glad it works for you.
