Well I have been a Vegeatarian for year, and I don't feel its really getting me to where I wish to go. So I have been thinking about switching to Veganism. Since I have no other Vegetarian or even Vegan friends, I have no real support with my decision. All my friends think that If I becie a Vegan I'll become very unhealthy (which I know can happen, I just need to eat well) and it will just make their life difficult when we go out. So I was just wondering if anyone had any tips, or advice for me to help with my decision. I do really want to become a Vegan, I just want to make sure I know how to eat healthy first.

Hi Charzardd!

I know how it is not having many people to talk to in real life about these things, but that's what Veggieboards is for! There are a lot of awesome supportive people here

Here's a nice general overview of veganism I like to share with people. It includes a lot of great nutrition info: http://www.vrg.org/nutshell/vegan.htm

Also, say what you will about PETA's crazy stunts they have some good info on their site too: http://vegetarian.about.com/od/veget...HowtogoVeg.htm

Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions

You can order a free starter kit that includes vegan recipes, food, and nutrition tips. Many organizations will send these out to you (and your friends). Here are some links:
http://www.veganoutreach.org/guide/free_guide.html
http://www.mercyforanimals.org/vegan-starter-kit.aspx
http://www.livevegan.org/vegguide/index.php

My mantra for healthy vegan eating is simply: variety, variety, variety.

Eating a wide variety of whole foods to includes legumes (don't forget lentils), veggies (duh...but a variety to include many colors like red (beets, tomatoes, etc) and green leafy..in variety), fruits (another duh...but don't forget berries, melons and mango), nuts , whole grains (and learn to cook a variety of grains like barely, quinoa, etc.), soy products (not processed veggie burgers, but tempeh, miso and tofu) and include a B12 supplement.

Don't think you have to get 100% of RDA of every single thing daily.

All the best

You say you "don't feel its really getting me to where I wish to go."

Where do you wish to go with veganism?

There are many vegans out there who do it for health, environment, ethical, or spiritual reasons. Perhaps if you explore the reasons you want to go vegan, and then explore some other aspects of why people choose this lifestyle. For example, if you are doing strictly for health purposes, look into the environmental/ethical reasons - or if you are doing it for ethical, check out the health/spiritual reasons. Sometimes having a well rounded view of allllll the great reasons to be vegan can help with the transition.

As for being healthy - yes, you will need to make sure you are eating a balance diet (just as any healthy person does) and monitor how you feel.

I have recently converted to veganism too. I don't have any vegan friends, but I love and have access to large variety vegetables and fruits, so I doubt I'll find myself short on anything at the end of the day
