Oh I've got very Ikea this year, although the nearest store is 50 miles away

Last month we bought 4 bookcases, flat pack, and I convinced my husband to saw up two of them and refit- so we have wall to wall shelves in the living room now.

And then all the lovely kitchen thingys. I treated myself to some glass storage containers for the fridge, so posh.

An Ikea/ furnishings thread I could live in...

Yes we do.

* thread hijack*

I like bamboo blinds to, but think I prefer velvet curtains.

We got metal blinds in the kitchen and when they get greasy it's not easy to clean them.

I might replace them with cotton curtains, that would be easier to clean.

*sigh* I want SOME kind of curtains in my bedroom. We've lived in this house for approaching two years, and I haven't found any curtains that I like yet. I'm probably too picky. At first, I thought that some kind of fishnet thingies would go well with the nautical theme I have going on in my bedroom, but then it hit me, "DUH, Skylark, you're a VEGETARIAN! Fishnets are part of the fish-killing process, and THAT doesn't go well at ALL with the live-sea-life theme."

I know, I could do that, but I wanted something I'd love. Perhaps I'll have to settle.

True.

But 'fishnets' DO go well with a red-light district prostitute theme, if you were looking to start up something new.

Ah, well, I wasn't going for that kind of a theme, either. Sorry, Av, I'll let you keep the red-light fishnets if you like.

I also thought about some kind of bead strings, but that might have connotations to the pearl trade, and I'm not too crazy about that.

I think I'll just get some plain white cotton curtains.

Yeah, there's a big tree partially obstructing any view into my front window, and we're out in the country enough that only birds could see in my back window. It's not that I NEED curtains to ward of Peeping Toms, but I'd like to have curtains.

I have lots of second hand curtains. If I get fed up I swap them about. I said if I could make up my mind, and saw some curtains I really liked, I'd buy some new ones. Six years later I'm still undecided. I did buy new thermal liners for some of the windows, expensive but apart from keeping us warm in winter, they are a total sunblock in summer, the front windows all face south and it gets as hot as hell if I don't draw the curtains midday. No one sold blackout blinds wide enough (eleven foot) and fitting two side by side was going to be really awkward.

I used to have bamboo blinds in some rooms at my last house- but from outside you can see right through them at night when the lights are on- definitely not a wise idea in a bedroom.
