I simply had to share this because I feel like this is the point where I can finally pat myself on the shoulder and say "Yes, I'm a vegetarian for real!".
Yesterday we went into a resturant with my nemesis. Sushi.

I have slipped twice on my vegetarianism and both were sushi. It was my favourite food in the whole wide world.

I didn't have a single piece of fish.

I ate vegetarian and vegan sushi until I almost collapsed but I didn't so much as think about having fish.

I know it may sound like a silly thing, but I am so proud of myself and kept beaming the whole meal to my boyfriend.

Did you guys have any of those tests when you first went veggie?

I can relate to this. Before joining this forum I had that idiotic notion that fish was okay. I haven't had meat since July 4th and that was easy. But on July 17th I justified sushi because "a lot of vegetarians eat fish." I felt horrible afterward. And I read the chapter on fish in Eating Animals the next day. So I haven't been tempted since then, but it would be fun to go get some vegan sushi... *rushes to yelp to find a place*

Congratulations on passing on sushi!

Congratulations on resisting the sushi! When I first went vegetarian, I had a pretty hard time giving up popcorn shrimp, it was so hard to say no to it when other people had it, but once you get over your test-food, it's a great feeling.

Good job abstaining. I've never had any intentional slips, but if I was going to have one it would have been over lobster. That was back in the early years of my vegetarianism, but now, all seafood smells so bad to me that I have no desire to eat it.

People always say its bacon that helps Veggies fall off the wagon. For me it was seafood.
I still crave fish and prawns(shrimp to Americans I guess) but you do have this overwhelming sense of pride when you say 'no' and just refuse to give in!
Well done you!
I miss sushi, where did you get veggie??

Thank you everyone

I don't know why but my brain is doing this horrible fighting over "but fish is not that bad" VS "it's a sentient being, you're eating a creature!" VS "but it is so goooo-oood" it sucks!

Since I decided to be a vegetarian, I've only "slipped" once. I was stressed and I was pressured by friends, I didn't remember what it tasted like....and it was awful. I felt terrible guilt. But even though I've been tempted by previous favorites, I never tried them. I just focused on making vegetarian friendly alternatives. It should be pretty easy to find vegetarian and vegan sushi. Sushi doesn't automatically include fish.
I don't know if it's the same in the UK but here veggie sushi is just a staple on the menu, there's always a section for various vegetable rolls like avocado, cucumber, etc.

When I first became vegetarian I went to have Eggs Benedict at a cafe and I ordered them without salmon (cafe staff thought I was crazy and wanted to put bacon on it and couldnt understand it) but anyway I ate it and never looked back. I ate a hell of a lot of eggs those first 2 months but now I hardly eat them at all.

in my experience, it is so so hard to be a vegetarian. i would be a vegetarian for a week then start to crave fort meat. i often find myself eating meat after some time of feeding myself pure veggies. i really need a support group like this forum. in our house, there would always be tasty meat dishes, its so tempting.
