Because it irks the hell out of me to hear people go on and on about their environmental talk while not taking a second to look at the impact of their diets on the biosphere.<br><br>
Case in point:<br><a href="http://www.macworld.com/article/159205/2011/04/green.html" target="_blank">http://www.macworld.com/article/1592.../04/green.html</a><br><br>
They asked for suggestions, so I sent them this:<br>
Here's a suggestion. There's a way to decrease energy consumption, water and air pollution and greenhouse gas emission all at once while working in front of your Mac, iPad or iPhone anywhere in the world. Eat a vegan meal while you are at it. In the US alone, animal agriculture is responsible for the greatest deforestation rates and it is the industry that uses and pollutes the most water. On a global scale, animal agriculture is responsible for 18% of greenhouse gas emissions, which is more than all forms of transportation combined. A single vegan meal a day far outweighs the impact of energy saving lightbulbs, driving a hybrid or putting your computer to sleep.<br><br>
Just something to think about.

There will be veg*n advocates at Earth Day. One or two will be speakers, and there will also be leafleters and booths set up. This is a prime audience for this kind of message, so why focus entirely on the negative or the fact the entire world hasn't been enlightened yet? Where you see gloom and doom I see a glorious opportunity.

EDIT: Sorry, I wrote something pretty nasty. I'm in a bad mood due to something I got at work, didn't mean to offend you or anyone.<br><br>
You are right, Earth Day opens the possibility to talk to people that could be more receptive. Thanks for reminding me of that.

I can understand your infuriation, sometimes it does get a bit difficult 'fighting the good fight.' However, we do have to look at it as an opportunity. The upcoming 'ethics and environment week' at my uni had NO mention of veg*n ethics or the impact of meat on the environment... until I forced it on them! Be ready to make yourself head is the thing!

Every day should be Earth Day. I am reminded of this quote:<br><br>
"Isn't man an amazing animal? He kills wildlife - birds, kangaroos, deer, all kinds of cats, coyotes, beavers, groundhogs, mice, foxes and dingoes - by the million in order to protect his domestic animals and their feed. Then he kills domestic animals by the billion and eats them. This in turn kills man by the millions, because eating all those animals leads to degenerative - and fatal - health conditions like heart disease, kidney disease, and cancer. So then man tortures and kills millions more animals to look for cures for these diseases. Elsewhere, millions of other human beings are being killed by hunger and malnutrition because food they could eat is being used to fatten domestic animals. Meanwhile, some people are dying of sad laughter at the absurdity of man, who kills so easily and so violently, and once a year, sends out cards praying for Peace on Earth."<br>

WOW. I had never heard of this quote before. It makes me very sad because it is so utterly true.

My university has "environment week" every year. This year the cafes on campus had a promotion involving "eco-friendly, low carbon" meals. EVERY one of them was meat. I couldn't even get soya milk for my tea. It's all about paying lip service to the green movement to make as much money as possible while not actually making a difference at all.

We have an Environment week coming up (which is why I forgot about Earth Day!) Thing is, we receive no support from the union or anything, so we run it ourselves. Meat free BBQ, and tables on veg*nism <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/grin.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":D">

I "hate" ( actually simply don't care much for ) Earth Day because in my area it has degenerated into just another marketing term and excuse for the same festival that happens over and over again during the summer. Funnel cake, plastic coated brochures from the table for the local utilities, people selling home made jewelry, misc crafts etc.
