I tried to search for threads on this, but i'm wondering if the * is used as a kind of wildcard option in the search feature, cause nothing came up.

It's just something i'm always curious about when i see people spell it that way

Cuz it's a bad word.

Vegan is vegan. In "veg*n" the asterisk takes the place of "a" in vegan and the "etaria" in vegetarian. It's short for "vegetarian and/or vegan" when you want to be all inclusive but are too lazy to type it properly.

There are many kinds of vegetarians like vegans and lacto vegetarians so that stands for any variation. In fact pesco vegetarians eaat fish but that is not really vegetarinan. Gay used to mean happy but now it has a different meaning.

However pescetarians (pescatarians? wtfever) are not included in "veg*n" as they are not any kind of vegetarian.

no.... people just type "veg*n" because this is the land and age of shortcuts, and people would rather type that then type "vegans and/or lacto-ovo vegetarians"

you're a vegetarian, because you do still eat eggs and dairy, even though its not every day.

you're not a vegan, 'cos they never eat eggs and dairy.

but as 'veg*ns' means 'vegetarians and/or vegans', you do fit in the category of 'veg*n', because you are one of the two things above.

veg*n is just a sort of slang to save writing 'vegetarian and/or vegan' if somethign applies to both groups, though, so i don't think you need to go round calling yourself a 'veg*n' to the general public, or anything.

i'd stick with calling yourself a vegetarian, or a veggie- which suits your eating habits just fine, and is more descriptive- it tells people more about what you eat, and is better understood by the masses than 'veg*n' is....

... and anyway, if you started calling yourself a veg*n, i don't know how you'd pronounce the '*', either....

'veg- [twinkling sound]- nnnn' ?

'veeeeg [asterix]- n' ?

'vehg- nnnnn' ?

its too much effort and too confusing- just call yourself a veggie

it's quite a common theme, just like the classic 'hi i'm new, i'm a vegetarian, and i eat fish' intro is.

like i said, i tried to run a search on it, i always do before i ask a question... but because there is a "*" in the word, most software recognizes that as a wildcard, and the right threads dont come up. I didnt see the one discussed last week

I appreciate everyone's response to my question. I'm sure you get asked that alot, but I honestly didnt know
