What I am wondering here is if anyone has had someone say to them "This is the way the world is, you should get used to it."<br><br>
Or, when I said I wasnt buying leather anymore, I got told "You know, you should learn to compartmentalise your feelings a bit more. You cant go around thinking of that stuff all the time."<br>
I am not sure how I am supposed to not think about it, now that I know about it?!<br><br>
Or what I was told the other day, someone said the quote "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference."<br><br>
Anyway just wondering if anyone else has had this and if they have any thoughts on the matter.

Translation: "The fact that you actually care about the world around you makes me extremely uncomfortable. It reminds me of how little I care and how little I do for others and it makes me feel bad about myself. Can't you just be apathetic like me?" <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/bigcry.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="">

I've been told things like that and things along those lines. Even if we couldn't change it, though, I feel like we can still make the personal choice to accommodate ourselves around the awful things that occur, in accordance with our personal beliefs. When I decided to go vegetarian, it was because I didn't want to eat animals. I didn't do it because the animals were being treated bad, or because I said, "I have to change things", it wasn't that big, it was a personal choice, maybe it sounds selfish but it was really a shaping of my morals, that I did not want to eat the dead corpses of animals anymore. I love animals, and it disgusted me to eat them that I just had to stop.<br><br>
Even if one can't stop awful things from occurring, it doesn't give him or her an excuse to commit an awful act his or herself. For example, just because people steal and we can't stop those people from stealing, it doesn't mean everyone should steal, too, just because they can't stop people from ever stealing again. In this situation, people murder animals for food, but that's not a valid excuse for one to contribute to the murder just because they can't stop others from murdering.

My parents told me that when I was five. I didn't listen. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/tongue3.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":p"><br><br><div class="quote-container"><span>Quote:</span>

Even if I couldn't change things does not mean I have to participate in it.<br><br>
But every one of us that changes and goes out and encourages others to change does make a difference.<br><br>
I think people who say things like that have either been beat down by the world or they are afraid to truly open their hearts and minds and realize that they can and should change themselves.

Because they feel so hopeless and impotent in their own lives they think everyone else should, too.

My dad has that attitude about life in general. I can only handle him in small doses. He's a very depressing individual.<br><br><div class="quote-container"><span>Quote:</span>

I agree with this. Also what Werewolf Girl said.

Yeah, I always bristle when I see that Serenity Prayer, I find it really hard to accept things when I dont like them.

I think the serenity prayer is mostly just overused/misinterpreted.<br><br>
It says the things I <i>cannot</i> change. Not the things I don't want to change, would find it hard to change, am too lazy to change, or am inconvenienced by changing. We <i>can</i> change our own diets, that's a duh. So we do! End of story.<br><br>
The serenity prayer is just a trite saying used as a bandage to cover people's guilt.

My thoughts are that this is a very wise quote, even if you're not religious it's always applicable.<br>
E.g, if your employer imposes a new rule on you that says that you have to start work at 8.30am instead of 9, there isn't any point in fighting that rule because it has already been decided, and if you are wise you know that and either comply with the change or move on to another job if you don't like it, but if it is something like animal exploitation and cruelty, there is every point in fighting to change that because those that have done so have already forced some changes. So it's pretty illogical for someone to throw that quote at you in relation to the use of animal skin.

THIS. Also, it's used as an attempt to stall when a person has no more arguments to <i>justify</i> something(see The Last Airbender supporters, and "not a homophobe, but that's the world we live in" homophobes).

I agree...I don't the see the quote having any relevance in this regard. Would have been a good time for you to respond that apparently, they are lacking in the wisdom department since they obviously don't know the difference. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/tongue3.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":p">
