I am new to this board and new to veganism. I am a guy. I have been lurking on this board for a few weeks now and I noticed and interesting trend. There seems to be more women vegans than men contributing to this board. I would guess for every male vegan that frequent this board, there are 5 women vegans.

My guess is that women tend to treat their bodies better than men. If you go to yoga classes and spas, the majority of the people are women.

Why don't more men become vegans since it is so obvious that almost everyone will benefit from it?

Actually, it's been often claimed that whereas there are more non-vegan veg*n females than males, male and female vegans are pretty much 50/50 percent. So if this board does have more females, it may be a peculiarity of this particular board and nothing more.

From Publishers Weekly

Many cultures equate meat-eating with virility, and in some societies women offer men the "best" (i.e., bloodiest) food at the expense of their own nutritional needs. Building upon these observations, feminist activist Adams detects intimate links between the slaughter of animals and violence directed against women. She ties the prevalence of a carnivorous diet to patriarchal attitudes, such as the idea that the end justifies the means, and the objectification of others. ...

Im not convinced that women treat they're bodies better than men overall, they're just more likely to be a hung up on what they look like.

I don't think many veg*ns do it for looks, no matter if they're men or women.

I wasn't talking about veg*nism specifically, I was meaning the reasons women might treat their bodies better than men.

then again, I also know plenty of females who engorge themselves with junk food almost compulsively...

with that said, I still bet (at least in my own mind/estimation) that the percentage of female vegans is at least slightly higher than men.

Do a poll to see if this is true. I never noticed a skew and, frankly, in many cases I'm never sure who's a dude and who's a chick around here.

Personally I think this thread was started with a false (or unproven) assumption.

I would think that Jessica Alana was, as usual, right on with the sissy comment.

I think for a lot of vegans it's not about diet and how we treat our bodies, it's about not making animals suffer or exist solely for something as trivial as human gourmandise or culinary pleasure.

And I think women, bless 'em, tend to be more compassionate/empathetic/sympathetic than men. Ergo if it is true there are more female vegans than male, then this might have something to do with it.

I don't know..in real life, I know just about as many male vegans as female. If we're talking about vegetarians, then my (own personal, anecdotal) experience would be that there are more women.

On VB though, yeah, there are more women. There've been some old polls, but we could do a new one. The imbalance though might have more to say about user of internet messageboards, than veg*ns.

According to a statistic that I read, there is only a slight lead in women vs. men in veg*nism. It's nearly half and half. Yet, I feel like I never run into any veg*n men, besides my husband and my sister's boyfriend.

But when you think about it, it is less socially acceptable to be a male veg*n then to be a female one. I just think that most of the men aren't as loud and proud as the women are.

I completed agreed with you here. I made the "mistake" of telling a few of my colleagues that I am a vegan. I will not do that again due to the backlashing that I got from them. It is incredible how people freak out when they hear you are a vegan.

From my small experience, men involved in animal rights also get more odd looks than women. It's not "manly" to care for animals.

If there ARE more women than men, then it could be that old maternal instinct.

I know 1 vegan male and 1 vegan female.

I predict the vegan population has a 1:1 ration, female to male.
