My husband and I went to whole foods for the first time this weekend. I fell in love with the variety of organic and vegan products. The cashier even let us sample a bag of vegan cheese (Score!) The only problem we had with whole foods is how rude the patrons seemed. We even had a few people look at us like we had a third eye or something. Is this something that is normal in Whole Foods? We weren't doing anything out of the ordinary, and if we were in someone's way we would apologize and they would just stare at us. I love the store, but i don't think i've ever been to a grocery store with so many rude people!

Its sort of a toss up at the one i go to...

Itsnot near my home and in a very affluent area, so frequented by some people who are probably there as a status thing..kwim? I have gotten some odd looks and even a comment or 2 as I buy ve*gan things..i guess some ppl assume all ve*ans are skinny and I am well..not...so I have gotten some ..looks
On the whole I find the staff and most people I have encountered there to be really very kind Esp the few i have um..accosted..to ask their opinions on vegan cheese and yogurt theres a sort of camaraderie there i think.
Then there was the guy yesterday who rudely asked me if I wanted to MOVE because my cart and child were apparently in his way while i let my 3 yr old choose which cookies he wanted. He was no so kind lol

I've never had problems with rude people at WF, and the one I go to is even in a snobby neighborhood, so you'd expect more rudeness.

I've never had anyone at WF act rudely towards me, but I've seen a few customers walking around with really arrogant looks on their faces. One dude would not get off his phone the entire time he was getting checked out and I could tell it really bothered the cashier, as she had a few questions for him.

I"m usually pretty oblivious to other shoppers. This thread makes me wonder, though, if maybe I could be mistaken for one of those 'rude" types. I know I get an expression of severe consternation on my face when I can't find what I'm looking for! Perhaps I should lighten up! You weren't talking about the WF in Richmond, VA were you?!?

Is it in Connecticut? I could name 2-3 stores that might sound like this, lol.
At any rate, I haven't noticed anything like this the 2-3 times I've been to a WF.

I've never been in a place that had a Whole Foods, so I can't say anything about the people that may be there, but I would love to see all the variety I keep hearing about. I feel so left out, coming from a small town. :p

This reminds me of the Whole Foods Parking Lot video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2UFc1pr2yUU

I've only been to one WF and the majority of the customers were upper class, not friendly and a bit snobby.

There are two WF stores in my town. One of them is a little larger and a little nicer than the other one. The larger store also seems to have slightly narrower aisles, and tends to be much more crowded. That store has far more rude shoppers than the smaller store. Observing people at both stores, I tend to think it's a function of how crowded the larger store is. It's hard to shop when people are blocking aisles and cutting you off, and on more than one occasion I have been standing in line and had the person behind me push their cart into me. (Once I turned and made eye contact with the person, who backed the cart off, but after I turned back I got bumped with the cart again. I really can't put that down to accident.) I always leave that store feeling more tense and angry than when I went in.

Unfortunately, the smaller store doesn't always carry all the same products, so I don't go to it as often.

In the parking lot of ours, my husband said that he saw a lady back her car into another lady! Lucky the one that got backed into had her grocery bags in front of her!

Quote:

whole foods, no. I've encountered a lot of rude people at TJ's though. I just answer them in the same snotty, sarcastic tone, but that's because I find the flash of annoyance and embarrassment in their faces amusing.

Me too. I hate it when I can't find something I really need or want.
And I am very good at being a snobby uptight ***** when I'm on a mission. Sorry.

I went to the one near my house and found it to be very expensive. I found a lot of the thinks that I buyto be way more expensive than TJs. I have to admit that getting around TJs with a cart is really hard. it is always so congested.

I hate to say it, but if something I am trying to get to is being blocked for more than a minute or two, I am going to say something. Going to WF is stressful, I want to get my items and get out. If I'm trying to decide on an item, I will stand back out of the way so other customers can get to the shelves. If what I want is being blocked by a cart or someone hunched over the shelves I will say excuse me, and go in for my item. If that doesn't work I will just stand really close and reach in front of them.

The worst is people who park their cart, blocking half the aisle, then stand blocking half of the space that is left, so another cart can't get by. Then I will either stand and stare at them until they move, or just move their cart.

Well I was right along the side of the aisle..and there for all of 10 seconds at most..and if he had in anyway indicated he needed to reach something I was in front of i would have gladly moved and apologized for being in his way...but he was just rude from the beginning. I was not blocking the path and had not been there an unreasonable amount of time..just long enough to ask my3 yr old chocolate or vanilla..and grab the cookies some people just think the world revolves around them..he was clearly one of those people

I went to Whole Foods for the first time a couple weeks ago. There was a couple who spent ten minutes debating which hummus to buy and standing so that they blocked that section & the vegan deli "meats" section. I know, I waited behind them & timed it. Walked away twice to look other places and they never budged.

But I suppose there's rude people everywhere. The cashier was very friendly and helpful. I live two hours from the store & he kindly offered to help put my items in an insulated bag.
