That's a rather old fashioned family farm outlook of raising animals there. I could apply it this way: Who is smarter? My cat for never having to forage for its own food and getting to spend the day running the neighborhood and nights in a warm bed with me, or me for taking the cat in and going off to work each day in order to buy its food?

Unfortunately, for your typical cow nowadays, the farmer's description is a rather humane one compared to what really happens. Not that I am saying taking a calf from its mother is humane. I am just saying that the degree of human dedication you see here to look after the welfare of the calf is no longer present.
