Which ingredients do I need to look out for?

Hello all,

Quite simply, with regard to make-up, which ingredients do I need to avoid? I am aware of Bovine, Ovine, Caprine, and Porcine - however I know very little about them. Can anyone shed some light on these and any other ingredients commonly used in cosmetics that aren't suitable for vegetarians.

Sadly, I am a student and earn very little, so cannot afford many independent organic, eco makeup brands so when answering please refer to knowledge regarding branded cosmetics (such as Rimmel) please.

I am also thinking of emailing all the major cosmetic companies enquiring about their ingredients and animal cruelty. When I get responses, I will update you all.

Are you just looking to know about cosmetics that have no animal products, or also don't test on animals? If a product doesn't say on it that they don't test on animals, then they probably do.

As for the ingredients, I found this:

Thank you for your response. That link has REALLY opened my eyes. And now I know what to look for.

I am emailing companies regarding their ingredients and animal testing policies. So far I have one reply from Proctor and Gamble, a company which owns product lines such as Head and Shoulders, Nice n Easy, Aussie etc. I will post their full reply soon.

I'd be interested to read what they say!
Proctor and Gamble test from what I've seen/heard.

I'm no longer a student, but I don't like to spend a lot of money on cosmetics (because I'd rather spend that money on comic books). I quite like Australis, if you can find it and E.L.F. Both are fairly inexpensive and cruelty free.

E.L.F from the last email I got from them, are vegan with their cosmetics (same might not be true for their brushes).

Australis have vegan products, but not all of them are. They have full ingredients lists on their websites with their products and actually say which ones are vegan.

When you're sending out emails to different companies, just be sure to ask whether they test ingredients or finished products and to clarify as to whether they get someone ELSE to do it for them. A lot of companies won't test the finished product, but the ingredients themselves are usually tested (if they test on animals at all).

Good luck with everything!
