I've looked at a few display names here and have been wondering for ages where the ideas for them came from, so I thought I'd ask! The story behind mine is quite boring - it's my real name. But if you want to know how I got it... well, my parents were about to name me Talula after some movie they had watched, and then when Mum was pregnant with me they were watching Star Wars and thought to themselves, "Hmm, 'Leia' is a pretty name." All I can say is thank GOODNESS for Star Wars, or I'd be Talula right now. LOL!

So, where are your display names from?

'Ahimsa' is a concept that I find beautiful. Here is the short version from WIKIPEDIA

Ahimsa is a religious concept which advocates non-violence and a respect for all life. Ahimsa (अहिंसा ahiṁsā) is Sanskrit for avoidance of himsa, or injury. It is interpreted most often as meaning peace and reverence toward all sentient beings. Ahimsa is an important doctrine of Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism. Its first mention in Indian philosophy is found in the Hindu scriptures called the Upanishads, the oldest dating about 800 BCE.

Mine is a mythical creature. I love the ocean, especially near the shore line and even more so during a storm. I could not imagine life not living by the sea, it brings me peace.

Quote:

Also known as 'Sea Sirens', the personality and appearance is most commonly known to be that of a seductive temptress. Her beauty has been said to reflect the wondrous treasures and power of the sea itself. Half-woman and half-dolphin or fish depiction's today are more common than the early sixteenth century part woman, dolphin and lion. The fish tail was thought to be shed when needed to make the mermaid more attractive to men. Medieval engravings have shown the mermaid to carry a small hand-mirror, which is the attribute of the prostitute. The sound of the mermaid singing was once thought to be a reason for sailors meeting disaster, as the haunting lilting voice was said to be heard coming from the waves forecasting bad weather. Mixed omens surround the stories of their sudden appearance being feared but also known to have saved the lives of sailors who had fallen overboard. Women saw them as enemies, as they were often thought to seek out men as partners, getting married, turning their partners into 'mermen'. Rejecting the approach of a mermaid was thought to bring severe misfortune to the man, and if she was injured a period of misfortune would meet a crew or coastline. Yet despite all this, the mermaid is currently viewed as a gentle creature kind in nature

Erm, chiara luna in Italian is clear moon. Beyond that, your guess is as good as mine as to why I chose it. Italian is a beautiful language, and I suppose that three years ago when I was choosing this display name I just thought that chiaraluna had a nice ring. It has served me well.

And the tilde?

There's been a bit of speculation as to what the tilde stands for.

At one point it was suggested that the tilde might mean "sex hog", but I think that was just someone (another mod) giving me the business.

We'll just say that the tilde represents the fact that I'm a Spanish speaker.

I take it that the other two are those you use on porn sites?

Well, Amy is my name. It means "beloved" in French. SF are the first letters of my middle and last names. They do NOT stand for San Francisco, as some people seem to think (although I've been there and I like San Francisco). I was simply not very creative the day I registered.

If you really want to know more, my dad says I was "more or less" named after his Aunt Ada. Ada isn't a bad name IMO, but I like Amy better.

Meet Washoe. The name is somewhat inappropriate for me since Washoe is a female chimpanzee, but I use it for my screen name because she was the first non-human animal to learn a human language.
