Hi, I live in the Toronto region, and so far, I can't seem to find the herb Pueraria Mirifica anywhere. I checked the Noah's store, chinese herb stores, etc. Does anyone know where can I find it? Thanks.

Phytoestrogens. It's for my mother who's suffering from symptoms of menopause at the moment.

I've tried red clover before and it didn't work that well, and neither did licorice, fenugreek, black cohosh, etc. basically every phytoestrogen that I can get my hands on except mirifica. And my mom's scared (really scared) of prescription medications.

Fair enough, I feel the same way about anything I'm going to ingest. It sounds farfetched, but maybe try some sort of new age store? They often have all types of herbs (though usually not packaged for consumption)

It might be the same thing. According to wikipedia, it is the root of the pueraria mirifica plant which is used. https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikiped...raria_mirifica

On a general basis I would say that experimenting with herbs isn't necessarily any safer than going to the doctor and getting a prescription for a pill. You mentioned liquorice in one of your posts above, which actually can be dangerous if you consume it on a regular basis and don't know what you are doing.

If I were you I'd tell your mother that the most potent poisons known to man are found in plants and animals, and that going to the doctor and getting a prescription drug might be a lot safer than trying your luck with herbs... I'm not opposed to herbal medicine, but I don't think it's a good idea to be overly afraid of conventional medicine either.

Good luck

Prehaps Health food shops don't sell it because it may not be safe ?

Apparently it comes under 2 other names :Kwao Krua or Butea Superba. If you google them up they don't mention anything about the menopause but are used for either breast enlargment or a natural male enhancer.
Nothing whatsover to do with her natural state of health. If she is suffering badly prehaps it would be worthwile and go and see a natuopath who could prescribe her natural remedies.
Plants can be just as dangerous as prescription drugs and should be used with caution.
