Just curious when other people eat breakfast, if at all.

I tend to eat about 2 hours after I wake in the morning. Im just not hungry right when I wake up. Although, if Im going to work out in the morning (which Ive been very lax about lately) I will grab a banana before I get started.

Also, a question on the timing of breakfast. I know breakfast is important - should I be eating when I wake up, as opposed to 2 hours later? Any thoughts are appreciated.

I eat as soon as I wake up, because I usually wake up shortly before I have to get ready for work. If I don't eat then, I don't have any time for breakfast.

I would advise you to not wait too long before you eat your breakfast - it really gives you a good start to the day. If you go to work out in the morning, though, you could always wait until you get home to eat breakfast. If I work out in the morning when I have the day off, I eat a little something, leave an hour later, then come back home and eat a full breakfast/brunch.

i usually have my breakfast about an hour or two after i get up- my routine just works that way- i have a shower, get dressed+do makeup, sort out cat stuff/work stuff/random stuff, then eat. i can't have a shower half asleep with a stomach full of breakfast, cos it makes me feel gross, i need to be awake enough to actually eat my breakast without falling asleep again in it, i can't cope with the idea of either food or eating until i'm feeling at least half human and just properly starting to wake up- hungry or not- and that takes an hour at least. so i do the other stuff first, then eat once i'm in a good place mentally and my body is ready for it. i actually just tend to have a glass of warm water with lemon in it first thing, that helps me wake up a little and kick starts your system apparently.

i'm one of those cranky people who while awake, and able to move and speak convincingly, isn't actually fully coherant and present in the land of the living for a good few hours after getting up in the morning. you speak to me at your own risk if its before 10 am, lol, you know?

the pre workout banana makes a lot of sense- you gotta have fuel if you're gonna exercise, i think if that was me i'd make it into a quick rice milk or soy milk or orange juice smoothie though, cos i wouldn't be able to face eating it right away- drinking is easier for me first thing.

your body knows when it wants food, and i'd go along with that, i think it seems logical that it won't want to process it right away when you just woke up, its got a whole lot of other stuff that its just started doing, to deal with first.

For me, 1-3 hours after waking. As a kid I had to get up for school at 6 am and catch the bus at 6:50. My mother always made me eat breakfast before I left home and I HATED it. Choking down breakfast that early was one of the worst experiences of my day. Ever since I've had the power to control when I eat, I eat at 8:30-9:30 (assuming I get up at 6:30-7:30). If I get up later, I tend have something small, like a botled fruit smoothie or soy drink, and have brunch or an early lunch. I do that even at work, and so do many of my co-workers-- we get to work at whatever time, and then at mid-morning, we take a short break to get breakfast, or eat something at our desks.

I've talked to people about this, and I think it harkens back to our hunter-gatherer days when you had to go out and get your food before you could eat. I don't believe that stuffing yourself with food as soon as you wake up is a good idea. I think it's better to "earn " your food with light to moderate physical activity before breakfast. I nearly always exercise before breakfast. I exercise on an empty stomach because I want my body to start burning its fat reserves rather than burning whatever I just put in my stomach.

I don't think our stomachs necessarily know best when it's a good idea to eat-- if that were true, no one would ever overeat and we wouldn't have an ovbesity problem. Our guts are too accustomed to having food and being full at all times. Our guts are kind of like spoiled children that way, and they need discipline. But even assuming it does know best, I'm following its cues, because it does NOT want food first thing in the morning.

PS: I've also noticed that on those rare occasions that I DO wake up hungry, it's usually after I had a really big dinner the night before. To me, that's just more evidence that our guts really DON'T know what's best, if overeating can generate more hunger.

I eat my breakfast as soon as I get up because I'm usually quite hungry. I've been known to sometimes get up early, eat breakfast and then go back to bed.

I eat pretty much when I get up, which is usually 9:30 or 10:00. Then again, if I have to get up at 8:00 or something, I probably won't eat until 9:30.

LOL, hoodedclawjen. I used to be the same as you in the morning. You wouldn't even think of talking to me first thing in the morning. But I've been unemployed for quite a while and have come to enjoy the early morning - probably because I don't have to go to work!

When I am ready for breakfast, I usually do have a smoothie. But I can't exercise with all that food sitting in my gut. And when I was working, I'd drink my smoothie on the way there, or wait till I got to work to eat.

OT: lol- thats weird, when i was unemployed i'd stay in bed till 11 am and go to bed at 3 am. i'm not working now, but i HAVE to get up at 7:30am cos we're selling the house and people can just randomly call to come look round and its better that i'm not in bed when they do turn up, but i still hate it with a vengance. i think my body clock is screwed. i've always been way better off getting up late and sleeping late- probably wonky wiring- but no matter what time you wake me, i have serious emotional issues for the first 3 hours that i'm awake. its almost scary for those around me, hahaha. i also answer the phone, take messages (and write them down!), and hold coherant conversations in my sleep. i'm special.

I've actually become a morning person. I usually wake up around 7 am, although I sometimes get up earlier. And if I sleep later than 8 am, even on the weekend, I feel like the day is wasting away. Yeah, there's something wrong with me. But hubby gets up for work at 5 am and is asleep by 10 pm, so I just usually go to bed at the same time he does.

There are plenty of days when I'd love to eat the minute I get up in the morning, but I actually can't do that. Reason is the first thing I do when I get up in the morning is take my Synthroid (thyroid hormone replacement, actually the generic for it), because it's supposed to work best on an empty stomach, and I have to wait 1-2 hours after taking it before I can eat anything. Needless to say, not being able to eat right away can sometimes make me craaaazy!

I put 1-2 hours after waking although sometimes it is 4-5 hours later. I usually wake up between 4 and 4:30 am and do not have an appetite until

6ish. Sometimes I am too busy or just not hungry until 8 or 9. I have always been a morning person, that's when I have the most energy. The latest I ever get up is 5:30 am and that's when I am being lazy or don't feel well.

Hoodedclawjen, I'm sooo the same way. But having children has FORCED me to become a tad more coherent... at least functioning on rote stuff to make sure my children get fed, etc. But talk to me? Huh... Hubby takes his life in his hands if he decides to discuss heavy stuff with me in the morning.

It took him a few years but he finally learned NOT to talk to me about ANYTHING until I've had my fresh squeezed OJ (my standard breakfast).

Recently, it had been a while and he started to talk to me about some heavy topic. When he went chasing his head rolling down the hill, he realized the mistake he'd made and apologized. LOL. For real. He really DID apologize for broaching a topic that would have gotten a very different response had he waited at least an hour. At the time, I wasn't amused. Later, I thought it was hilarious.

For me it's coffee. While I don't eat breakfast right away, I do have to have my coffee first thing in the morning or I get cranky.

I put 1 - 2 hours after I get up, but that's not completely accurate. Weekdays I get up at 5:30, I'm into work by 6:45 and usually eat around 8:00 here at work (cold cereal and rice dream). Weekends sometimes I eat breakfast and sometimes I don't. It depends on whether I feel hungry or not. If I do, it will usually be an hour or two after I get up otherwise I'll often skip and have lunch.

I usually eat like 3 hours after getting up. I usually get up around 7:30 and to work at 8... I am not a morning person... I bike to work to wake up. I do drink water all day (work - unsweetened herbal tea at home). I usually take a break around 10 and eat something like oatmeal then. That's usually when I begin to feel hungry. I ususally have lunch around 12:30 - 1 because that's when I begin to feel hungry and will eat. It works for me, not anyone else probably, but for me.

Throughout all of my childhood and teenage years I would wait quite a few hours before eating something.. actually you could say I just skipped breakfast altogether. I was just not hungry in the morning. People would say "you know, breakfast is the most important meal of the day", and I'd just roll my eyes and say that it doesn't make sense to "shock" the body with food when it's still half asleep.

However... I got into the habit of eating breakfast a couple years ago, and I now need to eat as soon as I get up. I get cranky if I can't, or have to wait even 20 minutes.

I think this reversal is simply due to the fact that I am much more of a morning person now than I was back then. Now it's no effort for me to get up at 7, while back then it was such a *painful* task! lol So of course I was lethargic in the morning and food seemed very unappealing.

Personally I think my body does send me good signals. It's not like I eat more now that I eat breakfast.. it just evens out, and I actually get more cravings in the evening when, for whatever reason, I haven't had a proper breakfast.

I usually eat breakfast about 2 hours after I get up...just how the routine goes. I'm up at 6 Am and so like most, I'm too groggy and half-sleep to even process food. After I shower/get dressed/put make up on, I'm usually good to go to have my Quaker oatmeal packet (YUM). Or irish steel cut oats if I have any.

The only time I eat as soon as I wake up is on a very rare Sat. when I have nothing to do in the morning... and even then, I usually wait at least 30 min cause I'm still sleepy usually.
