Hi Veggie Boards,

My name is Angus Chen. I'm a reporter with NPR/National Public Radio (you can see a list of recent work at wnyc.org/people/angus-chen). I'm working on a story right now about people, particularly young people, switching to a vegan or vegetarian or another diet (paleo, gluten-free, raw) and not being understood or supported by their families. I've heard some stories where parents resented their children for having to cook extra or make it hard to find a place where everyone could eat together - or during holidays. Others had felt excommunicated from their family altogether.

In short, if you can relate to this, I'd love to hear from you. Especially if you became a vegan or vegetarian while living with your parents/family. Post here or message me on Twitter (@angrchen) with your holiday horror tales, your experiences, and stories. I'm looking for some people to be interviewed for a piece.

Thanks! hope to hear from you.

Hi Angus,

Thank you for contacting us. For the sake of identity verification, can we contact you at your wnyc.org email, rather than through VeggieBoards?

I'm not on staff at NPR or WNYC anymore. I work freelance now, so my email account on their server is closed. I still publish with NPR frequently. I'm happy to speak on the phone with people, or you can send me an email at my personal email address at arc [at] angusrchen [dot] com. I'm also a verified journalist on twitter (twitter.com/angrchen), and I'm happy to tweet out something to prove that I'm the owner of the account. If you're still worried about my identity, feel free to confirm with my editor. I'll give you her email address in a private message since I don't know if she wants it to be freely out there!

As a 61 year old vegan who doesn't have to worry about what her mom says about switching to veganism, I have nothing to share with you Angus, but it sounds like you have an interesting idea for an article. Good luck finding what you need for it.

I'm 34 and became vegetarian when I was 14. My parents initially considered it picky eating. I am autistic and ate limited foods as a child because of sensory issues with the taste and texture of foods so they were used to thinking of me as a picky eater. There was also an argument when my mom put food that contained gelatin in a different food container and didn't tell me until after I ate some. A few months later my parents got mad at me when I didn't want to socialize with some peers from school (I didn't socialize because I'm autistic so my parents forced me to socialize) and while my dad was getting mad at me he said, "You don't eat what we eat and when you make a mistake, even a little tiny mistake, we get yelled at." Not only was that throwing a past argument back in my face, but my mom was the one who put food in a different container (with a different set of ingredients) so it wasn't my mistake it was my mom's. It seems like people keep saying children/teenagers who become vegan/vegetarian need to be sensitive to how it affects the family, but nobody thinks the family should be sensitive to children who become vegetarian.
