Several of my friends say that they're vegetarian, but they still eat fish. It annoys me so much, but we've argued about it and I think it's better not to bother them about it. Living in Ohio makes it hard to have many completely veggie friends, anyway.

I don't consider them vegetarians. In fact, they are huring other vegetarians because many restaurant cooks think vegetarians eat fish, which is not the case at all.<br><br><br><br>
There is nothing wrong with saying 'I don't eat red meat or fowl'.

I believe the word vegetarian is a loosely defined term that encompasses several different diets. I beleive vegetarian is a word that can be used by someone whose diet consists primarily of plants, but is not vegan. I think pescatarian and the various combinations of lacto-ovo vegetarians all fit under the umbrella of "vegetarian". By an English dictionary definition, pescatarians should not be included, but try telling that to Indians who believe fish aren't really animals, but are instead "sea cucumbers". It all depends on how vegetarian is defined, and there is no single universal source for this definition that all can adhere to.

I don't really care what other people eat. I'm vegetarian for my body and the animals. If other people want to eat meat then I'm fine with it.

It's annoying that they call themselves that, but I usually don't expect them to change just because I say so. I try to block it out.

My LA teacher is like that.<br><br>
It's really annoying that she stills boasts to people even though she's not a "true vegetarian."<br><br>
Yes, I've made my own terminology for it... >.><br><br><br><br>
But I've found that most of the people who do this went vegetarian because it was a type of diet to them, not a way of life...

My biology teacher tells everyone that he's a vegetarian and then tells us that his favourite meal is chicken tikka.<img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/rifle.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":gun:"><br><br>
I've had the dinner staff say to me when I've asked for the veggie option and it has nuts in it: "Why don't you try the sandwich bar. There's tuna sandwiches over there." Wtf?!?! Vegetarian = no meat or fish. Stupid people. Result: I don't eat lunch anymore as I can't take my own in as I'm meant to have free school meals but all the veggie options have nuts in them or have been cooked in the same thing as the meat <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/spew.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":spew:">

Why can't you take your own lunch? You shouldn't have to go hungry. As for your biology teacher... Sounds lilkes he's a bit slow.<br><br><br><br>
And I don't think vegetarians should eat fish. They have feelings too.

I'm glad they're eating less meat too, but this kind of ignorance makes it harder for <i>real</i> vegetarians to get vegetarian meals. I always have to triple check with people about ingredients because so many people are under the impression vegetarians can eat fish. And now that I've gone vegan, it's pretty much impossible to eat food that I haven't seen prepared/prepared myself or isn't very simple. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/sad.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":(">

phsycochick- I agree, being vegan it can hard to find food when I go out or if someone else is cooking for me. Especially because I'm pretty sure my school has something against vegetables, seeing as today they had FIVE different food choices with chicken in it, and nothing vegan besides chips. Honestly though, I have never been in a situation where somebody has prepared fish for me as a vegetarian meal, but I could see how that would be incredibly frustrating.

I shrug. I ate fish about a month after I gave up other meat, but I never called myself veggie and I recognized that I couldn't keep it up forever- I was only fooling myself.<br><br>
I think it's good that they've chosen to reduce their meat consumption, but that's what they've done- *reduced* their meat consumption, and I guess they can call themselves whatever they want but they aren't vegetarian.

Since 1982. haha no, I really have no idea, I suppose some people just have more sympathy towards land animals? That's the only explanation I can think of. It is strange though, espescially because many people have fish as pets.

They're pesky-whats-a-ma-call-its. Grr.....<br><br><br><br>
Ugh, i was just reading this, and went downstairs for a drink and saw a fish struggling with heaps of blood around it on the TV. I hate the TV now. It was not what I needed to see. Nobody who saw that could possibly say that eating fish is vegetarian.

Ok, well I USED to be a full vegetarian, but I now eat a little fish or chicken here or there, but I don't exactly call myself a vegetarian anymore. I have celiac disease which means I can't eat wheat and some other health issues that limit my diet. If I was a vegan I'd pretty much live on fruits veggies nuts rice and beans which would be nice, but would be very hard when going out to eat and very limiting. Someday I'd love to be a full veg again, but I don't call myself a "vegetarian" right now, although many people consider me one.
