Pollution from cars hurts people and the rest of God's creation. Driving impacts human health, contributes to global warming, and increases our reliance on oil from unstable countries and environmentally sensitive areas. Making transportation choices that threaten millions of human beings violates Jesus' basic commandments: "Love your neighbor as yourself" (Mk. 12:30-31); and "Do to others as you would have them do to you" (Lk. 6:31). In making my transportation choices with the Risen Lord Jesus, I believe He wants me to travel in ways that reduce pollution and consumption of gasoline.

Confessing Jesus Christ to be my Savior and Lord, including Lord of my transportation choices, I pledge the following.

o\tI will organize my life so that it is easier and more desirable to walk, bike, car pool, and use public transportation.

o\tIf I need to purchase a vehicle, I will choose the most fuel efficient and least polluting vehicle available that truly fits my needs.

o\tI will discuss with others the moral concerns and solutions associated with transportation.

o\tI will encourage automobile manufacturers to produce the most fuel-efficient and least polluting vehicles possible that truly fit the needs of the American people.

o\tI will urge government leaders to support public transportation, a significant increase in fuel economy standards, and research and development for promising new transportation technologies that reduce pollution and increase fuel efficiency.

"/end quote"

Im not Christian (anymore) but can go along with a lot of this.

What do you think?

Interesting. I've nver really thought about my choice in cars as being related to my commiting my life to God. I guess I see a point here, however until I can afford something that fits these ideals better I'm stuck w/my little old car. As a Christian, however, God has never laid it upon me to reconsider my choice in transportation, though He has had a significant impact on many other choices I have made in my life. This is something I will definitely think about as I go about my day today, however I'm not sure how much it will really change for me right away. Thanks for posting this, 1Vegan!

Not buying a new (other) car could also be explained as a positive action

He actually would drive a Honda sedan. I distinctly recall that in the Bible, it states at one point that Jesus and the Apostles were in one Accord.

I'm sure I'll keep this thread in mind when I drive Mrs. Tame's Navigator this weekend.

I still can't decide between a regular honda civic and a hybrid one. I don't drive that much, (40-50 miles a week) so I am not so sure I need a hybrid. I also figure their are fewer hybrids made, and thus higher demand, and thus less bargaining room for me when deciding the price.

In your case, a Civic is good enough.

Just treat the 5 hamsters that power your engine well.

Don't worry, I'll keep their wheels well oiled.

I calculated how much I'd save on gas per year, and it would only be like $50.

it also could be the other way around.

The issue is not do I need, but what does the world need.

My personal need is a small car, with a 300 bhp turbo engine. I get a mental high when I start thinking on this. Im a (former) car mechanic. Id love to build my own cannonball run car.

I have the money and the skills to do that.

But if I look at the world, global warming and other issues..

Im responsible for what I do. For me the standards/issues on cars are the same as for eating meat.

-\twhen I eat meat I contribute to things that I feel are not good (ethical and environmental)

-\twhen I eat meat I contribute to things that I feel are not good (ethical and environmental)

So (for me) (excessive) driving is contributing to global warming, destruction of the environment that some animals live in, rising of the sea level that will kill people in third world countrys. (rant, rant)

Just like veganism, I reduce all I can. I chose to work near where I live. Im car-free.

(Ive got a good bycicle and we have decent public transport)

Take the jesus part out of it and ask yourself: do I realise what Im responsible for?

I am not certain that "Jesus" ever existed...but, if the question were asked, what would the perfect being drive? I would say nothing - he or she would just instantly be there.

I think a decent human being drives a car that has the least negative environmental impact that they can possibly afford...or takes public transportation.

How can I find out how environmentally unfriendly my car is?

I just have a '92 Ford Escort that I picked up for a grand.

Mushroom, let me just understand this: you are saying that since I drive a large "comfort vehicle" (Olds Delta 98) for long business trips or drive a full size 4x4 truck (Dodge RAM) for other types of driving, that I am not a decent person?

I can afford a comfortable vehicle. I prefer comfort and reliability and enough power to crest a mountain grade without having to floor the thing. I certainly would not use the crappy, smelly, overcrowded, slow public transit service to get where I am going.

Is this a factor of one's decency?

You can bet my next truck will be a Cadillac Escalade (already test drove) or a Lincoln Navigator (have not test drove, been meaning to ask Tame for his opinion of theirs). And its not because I can afford it, its because I enjoy the comfort/look/style and everything else about it.

So I'm an indecent person because I will not purchase something cheaper that I do not like, or do not want, that does not provide the same level of comfort I prefer?
