Oh jeez....I'm going to be the worst vegan ever. I'm only on the 30 day challenge and I've used worcestershire. Never even occured to me to check that label! Please, tell me more!

Most Morningstar Farms products are not vegan. A few varieties of worcestershire sauce are vegan. You just have to get used to reading labels.

I was sad when I learned that our local pizza place wasn't vegan. Really, why do they need to put milk in all of their tomato sauces?

I still can't get over that most people use beef or chicken broth in veg and bean soups. I've grown up on those soups, and my grandmother never used meat stocks-and she wasn't vegetarian, they just didn't need meat broth. I know, I'm in the minority, but that really shocked me. Even tomato!
I'm mostly ticked off by Trader Joes cheeseless pizza having honey in it, and finding algeal omega DHA pills on sale that have gelatin capsules. It's like being taunted.

I expect things and places to not be vegan. I'm more surprised to learn some things ARE vegan.

Yeah, that always pisses me off. Most canned vegetable soups, split pea soups, etc. are not vegan. Even if they're vegetarian they're usually not vegan. The only canned soup I eat is cambell's tomato (but they have 2 kinds and one isn't vegan).

I was also surprised when I found out that english muffins are often not vegan and that none of the goddam doughnuts at Dunkin Donuts are.

Mashed potatoes! For the first month or two of being vegan I didn't know these had milk in them I never ate them, luckily, but I kept craving them because I used to love mashed potatoes, and one day I went to get some and saw they had milk. Luckily they're easily veganized, but it's not the same convenience as buying them smoothly mashed and ready to heat like I used to as an omni

Also, beef fat in banana Twinkies? Is that really necessary? I don't know I'd they're vegan otherwise, but the fact that they're not even vegetarian makes me so upset

I have no idea what exactly beef collagen is or why it's an ingredient in a beverage and I don't want to know.

Quote:

Milk?? That's odd. A lot of pizza places here put cheese in the tomato sauces.

Not all, but a lot. Most Aussie beers do for example. It's not just beef you need to worry about either, the swim bladders of fish are often used as isinglass, to filter the booze and to line casks. Lots of other booze isn't vegan for this reason, some wines, spirits etc...

edit: not to mention the more obvious animal ingredients possibly added to booze, like egg, honey etc.. if in doubt mail the company that makes your favourite tipple, and they are usually fairly open and honest.

Seriously????

How do I find out? Most beer labels don't give much info on them. Same with wine - how would I know if its vegan or not?

There's a few sites online that list breweries etc.. like http://www.barnivore.com/ .

Some sites have differing information about certain brands though, so I usually contact the company directly. They are usually pretty open and honest.

And yeah, labelling on booze is woefully inadequate. In Europe at least, alcohol is exempt from many of the labelling laws in terms of ingredients, I believe. Sucks
