What Vegan Does for Me

So many threads about how hard veganism is, about the finer points of veganism, about general questions, about issues... These are all necessary and wonderful and informative, but I really want to have a feel-good kind of thread where someone who'se not really sure if veganism is worth it can look through and think "wow, its not that hard, its not that impossible, its not masochistic, and its worth every bit."

Or at least "dayum those are sum happy vegans."

So yeah, this is for everything--big and small--from the lifted guilt off your shoulders to the fact you got to try Isa's Pumpkin Ziti. I'll start us off with a few of my own:

-Since becoming vegan, I've come to appreciate and love life so much more in all its forms. Before, I never thought I would truly care so much about the life of an animal, (even, as some of you know, bees
). I really was able to push it out of my mind and chew away on pain and death without thinking about it--and I'm so thankful, so so thankful, that I could never do that again. I feel like I appreciate life so much more for what it is, and appreciate the world for so much more. Veganism has given me the opportunity to wake up each day and work towards making a change for the better.

-Veganism let me regain my love for cooking. Before veganism I suffered from an eating disorder, and had messed up eating habits (obviously?). Veganism made me healthier, giving me wonderful tasty, creative foods to indulge in. It also made me realize that healthy, nutritious foods ar 100x more important than low-calorie foods for your wellbeing, and that in the end--who cares if I'm a size 2 or a size 6? I'm healthy, happy, and harming nothing!

-I've gotten to try SO many new veggies. (Sure I COULD have without veganism, but I wouldn't have.)

-Vitasoy. 'Nough said. :p

I showed you mine now show me yours!

Veganism has made me into a hardass so that when we are trying to have a civil discussion about honey I resort to sarcasm.
It has made me realize that we really don't need to harm/kill any animals. The last non-vegan food I gave up was organic biodynamic yogurt. I was convincing myself that it couldn't be bad for the cows -- I was intentionally ignoring reality.

But veganism is fun and when you decide to do it it seems easy. Well, for me anyway. Vegan is ever expanding, imo, and I love to think about its potential. Like with that thread on the slaughterhouse that burned down -- I imagine someone starting a huge multi-crop (including many trees) veganic farm. Peace.

I got into this whole new lifestyle because I decided I wanted to save the environment. I took notice that my company still used Styrofoam cups and remembered the whole biodegradeable thing. Now, I'm obsessed with being green and doing my part to save the world. Agriculture is a big ole mess. I read an article in a magazine today about how beef is the SUV equivalent of carbon pollution disaster in the agriculture world, and I agree.

I've done a lot of reading since making this decision, and feel like I know too much now
But it's all for the best. Since cutting the animal products out, I eat much better, have much more energy, and found THE BEST restaurant ever (Village Natural, between 6th and 7th on Greenwich in West Village, NYC) that features tahini dressing, vegan curry, vegan pot stickers, the best vegetable medleys, you name it. This place rocks socks. I would have never tried it had I not made this undertaking.

I think my boyfriend eats better now. He's broken into my veggie burger stock because it's more convenient than chicken. Not necessary a good reason, but I'll take it. He's also not about to cook if I am cooking, so he has a lot of vegan dinner, and thus vegan leftover for lunch. He's like, 75% vegan I would suppose. I'm spreading the love.

Overall, there's no way I can see this being a bad decision. The health benefits, animal rights benefits, and environmental benefits are endless. That, and there's all these cool people at this veggieboards forum

It helps my fibro more than being an omni did.

It helps me keep my weight at a good level without stressing (read: getting completely immersed in my ED).

It keeps me healthy!
I don't find being vegan hard at all. it's the opposite.. it's simplified my life. I don't feel limited in anyway, I do not feel like I have given anything up.
It has made me realize that I didn't need all those extra saturated fats to survive.

It has made me see that I don't have to drive 400 miles round trip for grass fed most humanely killed beef. (Well, more than once a year, since I still live with omnis)

It made me see there is a whole world of food out there I didn't know existed.

It makes me feel healthy.
As an omni I never cooked because I would just eat what my mom cooked or I'd eat microwaved food, blagh. Being vegan got me into cooking for myself and I just love it! My mom's always asking me to make her one of "those crazy vegan sandwiches"! :p

I've also gained a lot for respect for myself, knowing I am eating healthier and doing my part to help the other creatures of the world. I used to go around preaching about world love, but then I'd eat a grilled cheese sandwich, kind of hypocritical, but now I can say I would never now or in the future harm another living thing.
Veganism has

- made me at peace with my own morals. I believe it is always wrong to harm animals, not I live in accordance with my beliefs.

- given me a joy of cooking. I love creating new dishes, finding new websites with new recipes, and enjoying delicious and cheap food.

- taught me how to bake, and how much better home made cupcakes, cookies, cakes and brownies really are!

- allowed me to look upon my companion animals and the surrounding wildlife without feeling guilt.

- completely rid my body of the horrible digestive problems I used to suffer from.

- helped me discover a more spiritual side to my nature.

- made me work towards being a better and happier person.

Veganism is the best thing I have ever done, the biggest achievement in my life

Veganism has:

- made me feel "cleaner" on the inside - body and conscience

- increased my energy level

- increased my love for all animals, including humans

- helped me improve my athletic performance

- gotten rid of my spring allergies

- led me to try wonderful new innovative recipes (and foods)

- increased my overall intake of fresh fruit and veggies

- helped me establish an even closer connection with my boyfriend (we became vegan together)

-...... (I am sure there is a lot more that I am just blanking on at the moment)

Overall it has been one of the best decisions I have made in my life.

For me, it means I am living my life the way I know I was meant to live it.

Veganism does more for the animals than it does for me.

You know, like when apparently some woman asked George Bernard Shaw if he did not eat "meat" for health reasons, and he replied "yes, for the health of the animals".

That's a wonderful way of putting it.

That's the funny thing about the argument of veganism being 'too hard'... the idea that it shouldn't be 'hard'. Or that goals that are hard to achieve are a bad thing. Veganism is hard work. It takes thought and diligence and [com]passion. And it's worth every minute of it. And that's what makes it so easy.

What veganism did for me is it helped me take a stand... speak truths... give of myself without needing to take. Veganism helped to give me a voice so that I can give that voice for others (the animals).

***and YAY for my one year Vegan-versary!***

Congrats on the vegan-versary!!

And yeah, I definately would find it harder to eat animal products than not to! Sometimes I try and consider going vegetarian and I just can't stomach it...

Congrats on your veganversary! I don't know mine

When I walk into a grocery store now, I feel like there's TOO much selection. When I was omni -- and indeed, like most omnis I know who eat the typical SAD - I would just get a few staples (animal based) and never ventured into much variety. Now I have to refrain myself from filling the cart!

I guess it was even worse when I was in Seattle, with the Pigs Peace all vegan grocery. I love that place for vegan junk food!

- Vegan has in a way, changed my life and my views on animals. When I was a meat eater I claimed I was "vegetarian at home and meat eater at school". Obviously, any vegan or vegetarian would be outraged at hearing this. My current self would, too, since it was total hypocrisy.

- Before I was vegan, I didn't have much interest in the things around me. I started having obsessions about rabbits again, like my good ol' days, and rabbits (don't laugh, lol), also changed my life. But that was after I turned vegetarian. I was very devoted to vegetarianism and was more aware about the animal industry.

- My views about animals changed, too. I appreciated them more. I had more of a passion for them. Above all, I respected cattle, pigs, chickens...

- My lunch at school, was needlessly to say, crappy. I wanted to be vegan at the beginning of my school year, 7th grade. But those dang lunches always made me guiltier and guiltier. And one day in early December, I decided: I'll drop the school lunches. I don't enjoy yogurt or salads after all.

- I became more extreme (not force) and tried to drop those refined sugars, but my family is was and still is a vegetarian, so it's going to take a lot of work replacing every food in the cabinet vegan. I picked vegan products, and dropped all the ones who had animal by products. I, of course, was still more determined to become vegan.

- I memorized a lot of the animal-by products' names. I checked every single label of the food I was handed. If my friend offered some packaged food, I would say "Hey, can I see that?" and pretend to look at the wrapper. But no, I was checking the ingredients.

- Becoming vegan made my life much more interesting. Sure, there are plenty of obstacles, but hey, in the end, it's all worth it. I'm still in the process, for this splurge and desire for becoming as complete as I can has only begun about 5 months ago.

If I haven't had become vegan or vegetarian in the first place, I swear to you, I would have pimples. Not that it's that bad, but I have a pimple-free face, which makes me feel healthier and look healthier. You know, back in 5th grade, I got some before. I guess it was from all those crap foods. But now, in 7th grade, I see my fellow classmates covered in zits. And of course, won't. ;D

I have a lot for vegan-ism, it's one of the biggest passions in my life. Examples:

1) Being Vegan

2) Physical Strength

3) Rabbits (And chickens, pigs, cows, etc.) >_>

4) Natural Remedies (Not that big, but worth mentioning)

Hee-haw! I feel better posting this. :B

I love it and don't find it hard at all. I've been vegan for almost 5 years and sometimes it's hard to believe that I used to actually eat animal matter. Sure, there are minor challenges, but they're nothing compared to the lightness (physical and emotional) I feel being vegan.

Amazing, isn't it, how when one looks at a piece of cheese or a piece of animal flesh that the brain no longer registers it as food! When I go somewhere and there is nothing for me to eat, it's not just a question to me of that there is nothing VEGAN for me to eat. Animal products are just not food for me, anymore than plastic or my bicycle is (although I remember reading once about a guy who ate his bicycle).

I know what you mean. I am just in my first few weeks and meat products are starting to look that way to me.
