Okay, so I've never been to Trader Joe's before and I'm going tommorow so since I hear everyone talking about their vega*n stuff on here, I was wondering if anyone could give me any reccomendations as to what to pick up.

Like all other places, you'll have to check labels. They're vegetarian friendly, but not quite as vegan friendly. However:

Their breakfast patties are vegan, and pretty good.

They have fresh organic tofu.

They have vegan lunch "meats". They also have baked tofu. I only get the teriyaki flavor. I like to slice it up and toss it into salads for extra protein.

They carry Earth Balance margarine.

They carry Ezekiel breads, which is vegan. I think their house brand pita bread is also vegan.

A lot of their chips and bagged snacks are also vegan. They carry a LOT of nuts and dried fruits.

Oh yeah, they have frozen burritos. Be careful, one type is vegan, and the other has cheese, but I think it only says cheese in the ingredients list on the back of the package. If you're avoiding cheese, check carefully.

That's what I can think of offhand.

Thank you. ^.^ And I should have specified that I was looking for specifically vegan food, but this was very helpful.

Guess what? I forgot to mention their Eggless Egg Salad! It's vegan! You can use it as a spread on bread with lettuce, tomato and onion, and it's heavenly.

And the soyccotash (frozen succotash) is great. They use edamame instead of lima beans, which works for me since I hate lima beans.

Am I the only one here who doesn't really like Trader Joe's? The one where I live is always crowded, and there really isn't much of a selection for vegans beyond the produce section. They do have a couple things I like though.

-Coconut almond date bars. DELICIOUS. Tastes like a chocolate bar, I swear.

-Cheeseless pizza, it's an Amy's immitation pizza, but two dollars cheaper, which is awesome.

-They have some nice frozen stirfrys.

I just got a TJ's care package from a freind (we don't have a store nearby) and she sent a bag of "harvest grain blend"- it is baby garbanzo beans, orzo, and red quinoa. I cooked it in veg stock and it is SO good. She also sent the dried pineapple and some other stuff- have not tried anything else yet but those 2 are good.

Trader Joes is ALWAYS crowded. I find the BEST time to go is after 7:30, but you may find that there are no whole wheat pitas left lol. I love their lentil soup and all their organic canned beans. I usually buy their bags of organic lettuce, organic tortilla chips, salsa, lemons, organic tangerines, earth balance and soy ice cream. They have a lot of great juices too!

I just came back. It was so crowded, though. I felt like I was squishing into other people, but it was cool. I love the flax seed chips and they're dried fruit/nuts section is amazing. Thanks for all the great ideas as to what to pick up. ^.^ My mum and I decided to shop there from now on, even though it's a good 45 minutes from our house.

Oh, that's great! So glad you found things you like. There are a lot of them in my area, so the only time they are crazy busy is on the weekends here. I try not to venture in then unless absolutely necessary. And then, I leave my cart/basket at the end of the aisles and weave in and out of the masses much easier!

There is a TON of stuff for vegans at Trader Joe! My sister and I used to go there all the time, because most of their stuff is wicked cheap as well. The produce section often does suck, but I can get that stuff elsewhere. Faves (all vegan when last I went):

frozen vegetable Biryani

TJ brand veg burritos (with tofu..check the label to find the vegan one)

vegetable spring rolls

vegetable "birds nests"

mango passion granola cereal

mango peach orange (I think that's right) juice

candied ginger

chocolate covered peppermint sticks

zBars (by Clif Bar, but low cal and free from soy protein isolate)

cheap vegan chocolate chips (I'm on a chocolate roll here)

Jose's chunky salsa

delicious chili

3 bean soup, minestrone, and some others I'm failing to recall

Soy Cream "ice cream"

maybe 4 varieties of vegan shampoos/conditioners (I like "Essential")

good moisturizing lotions

vegan, organic wines

I could think of probably 20 other things, but I'd have to ponder a bit. I've been to Trader Joe's in 5 different states (sad, but true), and I've never had a problem finding vegan fare.

Alli,

no you're not the only one. I do like TJ's, as I like the atmosphere (i get the feeling that the employees there like their job better than say, the employees at Stop N' Shop), but I find myself preparing to be weaving in and out of customers and being jammed into tight spaces. Someone mentioned that going after 7:30p is a good time to go, I'll have to try that out since I have NEVER been there and not been part of a huge, bumbling crowd.

I'm really lucky because right after moving to Cambridge (which is considered the "crunchy" part of Boston), I became vegan. So most of my shopping is done at the crunchy store-The Harvest CO-OP. My advice is to ready yourself for a long grocery trip. Take your time, as someone suggested, going up and down every aisle (as narrow as they may be), and checking out everything. It isn't the usual bunch of junk that your brain is used to.

Also, I noticed at the CO-OP as well at TJ's, other shoppers tend to involve me in their shopping experience "Have you tried this organic peanut butter?" or "You HAVE to get those rice cakes."

"Are they vegan?"

"Yeah duh! it says so right one the package!" (this is the sort of stuff that would never happen in the "regular" grocery stores).

Enjoy!

PS Do you have cats? I make special trips to TJ's for a cat litter I haven't seen anywhere but there. It's called SPACE. It comes in a red box and is about 5 to 6 bucks. It's AWESOME!
