Cholesterol is a big part of why I'm here. Mine topped out at 218 -- ridiculously high for an athletic/relatively healthy person. Apparently my genetics predispose me to be a little HDL and LDL factory. I recently learned that my mother has been battling it for years and is finally on meds for it. I decided diet and exercise over meds, hopefully it works.

i got mine checked 2 months ago and it was 3.0 (in australia)

apparently a "normal" level is between 3.9 - 4.5 (something like that).

i don't know what that means by american/canadian/british standards .... anyone know?

A year ago my cholesterol was 207. High cholesterol runs in my family, so even though I barely ate any cholesterol, it was a little high. After that, I stopped eating dairy and started exercising more. Within six months it was down to 178. I'm sure it's even lower now...

160. This was last year when I ate meat and dairy and eggs.

I hope to get it down below 135 following a vegan diet.

The last time I got it checked it was low.....real low. On the bottom end of the scale, I think. I remember the doctor telling me to "eat more meat" so I could raise my numbers. I saw Hubby's face when the dr said that. He knew what was coming and boy, did it ever! I b$tched about that comment for the whole 45 minute drive home and nothing was left "ungriped". I raked on the dr, his overpriced office in "Madeomoney heights", the gumball machine he got his license out of and I even threw in a few uncomplementary things about that ugly little chihuhua that he called a medical assistant that had a voice shrill enough to break glass 3 states away. She bruised me like mad taking the blood and I looked like an addict for 2 weeks afterwards.

Hubby's been "pressuring" me to get it rechecked along with a few thousand other things that I've been told runs in my family but oh, the thought.....

Finally heard back from my doctor's office today (I called to double-check mine). My cholesterol's even lower than I thought: 112. That was as of October, 2002, after I'd been vegan only 6 months. it's been another six months now, so I wonder if it's gotten any lower.

I remember in October when he told me, I said "Wow. That must be the vegan lifestyle," He said not necessarily, and that it could be genetic predisposition, but I know it was closer to 160 or so a few years ago. So, yeah, I've always had fairly low cholesterol, considering my diet, but I'm pretty sure vegan eating knocked off another 50 points (or nearly 1/3!).

He seemed pleased by the number and not concerned, and didn't even seem concerned about the vegan eating. So, DeeYahMK, you may want to get a new doctor, if for no other reason than to make sure you're getting an accurate reading!

Thanks, I will. I've been thinking that I really needed to do that again, even before Hubby started the "making noises" about how I need a rechecking. I'm still guessing I'm pretty low, but I shouldn't guess. I should recheck and know for sure.

ive only just seen this thread..

ive been on medication for my high cholesterol since i was about 12 (im 26 now). It was over 10 when i first got it checked which is very high. It went down a bit with a strict diet, but now it seems to stay around 6.5 ish. I havent got it checked for over a year which is very bad of me (i moved flats and never found a new doctor. I absolutely hate going to the doctor). I know i shouldnt be slack with my medication. My father died of a heart attack a few weeks after he turned 40 (no doubt his high cholesterol was a cause) so its definately a genetic thing..

(btw, im not sure how these readings translate into american cholesterol readings...)

My HDL's were low, (the only thing a person may want to raise, certainly not LDL's), and my MD said, "Exercise more" not eat more meat and saturated fat. What a quack!
