I had something at a vegetarian buffet I can't identify. It was labeled paneer but I don't think that's what it was--that's cheese, right?

It was crab cake sized/shaped, breaded and I believe, fried. It seemed to be mashed orange squash inside with a curry-like flavor.

It was next to samosas (which I also had never tasted before), which may mean nothing I suppose.

Paneer is a form of cheese (it is similar in texture to firm tofu). What you describe sounds like Aloo Pakoras. Google images of them and see if that's what it was. They are usually kept near samosas, regular pakoras, naan, etc.

thanks. aloo pakoras sounds like potatoes in besan batter? I don't think that's it. I rly think it's mashed squash with curry. I had it again and it does seem like that. This time it had no label.
