Many people believe that the most important reason to live is to be happy. However, happiness differs among everybody, as different things make different people happy. So my question to you is what makes you happy? How can happiness be achieved? Are you happy? (please be as thorough in your explanation as you'd like).

Happiness or love, or whatever desirable to have, is where you don't necessarily expect it... so what is optimum for happiness, is like asking what are the rules which guide it, but sometimes you gotta know there are no rules for how happiness manifests.

Because sometimes to try too hard to be happy can be too pushy and you end up with something thats kinda fakey.

just a quick 2 cents, I'm sure I can do better, but how to be thorough about explaining it I don't know.

For me happiness would be loving and being loved and doing a ****load of (AR) activism. I'm not happy but I'm cheerful from time to time.

Oh, and happiness is a warm gun, of course.

I'm not sure the most important reason to live is to be happy, and I would prefer peace of mind over happiness. Although sometimes having peace of mind leads to happiness.

What leads me to have both peace of mind and happiness. I would have to say completing my goals, simplicity, not having obligations, learning.

Things that (would) make me happy which don't necessarily/usually give peace of mind: finding a large sum of money on the ground, procrastinating, flying, building things or repairing things, not holding my temper or just being rash when someone makes a stupid comment about veg*nism, animal rights, the environment.

I'm sure there's more, but I can't think of them.

I have moments of happiness, I suppose, but I feel better and it's more lasting when I have peace of mind.

Interesting first post. What made you decide to ask it here?

What makes you happy?: That's hard for me to answer. It depends on what I'm wanting at that moment in time. If I have it, I'm happy.

Can happiness be achieved?: Yes.

Are you happy?: I would not say i'm thrilled-happy. I'd say i'm happy-content. For the most part, I like my life. I like how things are. The things I don't like, I'm working on changing.

I used to have a good friend who hated the term "happy" because it had so much clap-trap baggage like being cheerful, complacent, etc. So I would use the word "satisfied" with him instead. I would rather be aware and upset about what's going on than ignorant and blissful. I'd rather be cynical and depressed than self-delusional and some sort of stepford citizen. I think it was this point that made him hate my use of the word "happy" as in, if you don't x, you'll never be "happy". Like I wanted him to turn into a bouncing smile face from a wal-mart commercial.

I've thought about this much more lately. I am not sure we'd really be "happy" if we erased all wants, and other negative emotion. We would no longer be human. There is something deeper than happy. It can be a job well done, fighting the good fight, leading a life of integrity despite it's hardships, it could be striving towards an unattainable goal that keeps you feeling alive.

Sometimes it feels good to be really sad, really angry, really down. It reminds you you are alive.

for my obligatory book link- Martin Seligman is a positive psychology researcher. He has many tests on his site including an inventory of what specifically makes you happy. For me it included things like being creative and justice.

I find there are many kinds of happiness.

Sometimes happiness for me is a feeling of peace, contentment or relaxation, and sometimes it is an overwhelming feeling of joy.

Times when I feel happy include when I am skiing, dancing, reading, spending time with friends and family or when I just plain get the feeling that life is wonderful.

Happiness is going out with a friend for a few drinks and having the establishment play "baby got back", "ice ice baby", the vapors' "Turning japanese" and the beastie boys' "Girls" all within like an hour.

I don't I believe the most important reason to live is to reproduce, this is after all a human's most primal instinct.

1. Mental Stimulation

2. It's different for everyone and I cannot speak for everyone.

3. Relatively no.
