This is not something I've seen appear in my Network Connections before, and even more strange is that when I go to click on it to try to establish whether its active at all and to connect to find out what it might be connecting to, it still shows as Disconnected in text next to the icon, hmmm, even though the brief showing text said it got connected.

And to top it all since posting THIS THREAD about the Gateway Internet Connection icon (whether part of XP I don't know) which you see highlighted in my screenshot, that icon or GIC disappeared again, and I don't even know why its appeared in the first place. I'VE NEVER SEEN IT APPEAR BEFORE!!! BUT SINCE I HAVE, it does not disappear when I am connected, only afterwards, and so what might it have to do with my SpeedTouch broadband, is it possibly being hijacked?? I don't see how, I have my Norton to protect me!!

(and basicly I just don't know if it should be there this Gateway icon thing!?!?)

Please see more explanation on my screenshot attached. [the shots to the right are when I'm checking the settings of the internet connection incidently for whatever reason - (I don't know) - under the Gateway catagory of Network Connection in XP control Control Panel]

btw: Ignore my dialup Freeola icon at the very top, as that is just back up for my SPEEDTOUCH(modem) broadband, (however god knows why my broadband is situated in the dial up catagory (but thats another issue I guess)

TO SUMMARIZE MY FIRST POST VERY BRIEFLY:

And so the issue I'm most concerned about is the icon lowest catagory (in network connection called the Internet Gateway (Connection/ SHARED ??)

And in the far right screen shot I tried to delete the services supposedly running on my network but as you see they reappeared ( I guess they're system files, which makes them deletable but they appear right back again! )

BUT WHAT ARE THEY BEING USED FOR and why do they remain selected even when I've deselected (and tried also as I said to delete them)???]

I was scared I might have a dialer hijacker or something, so I panicked, not knowing what all this is about.

wow, I got some answers, you guys know your stuff huh? Thanx both!!!!

However, looks like I'm gonna have to dig quite deep for an answer though (possibly)...

Do you (either of you) think the annoyance (or gliche as maybe) in my case, might be a combination of tiny errors that can easily be put right or ignored even?

I hope not a concern for my internet security anyway..

I know it seems unlikely and probably is.... but I'll ask anyway~ is what seems an error actually an error here, and what would make me prone to a hijacker using my connection and would something like what has occured for me maybe give them a way to setup 'their own' dialer or thing on my PC ?? (just a thought, just in case its a nasty possibility I need to be aware of).

Anyway, I hope it will stop gliching by itself, if it is a gliche, this internet gateway thing etc.

ps, I tried deleting the gateway ICON earlier when I first noticed it last night, and tried also as I said to delete some of it settings properties, but I was not allowed by my PC to do either, it simply told me~ cannot delete or thing.

(or I thought I had deleted the properties but apparently not, and they appeared back again in the same place I deleted them a little while letter as I said (rightfully enough I guess, I dunno!!) ....and I'm not sure how wise a thing that was to do anyway (attempting to delete) so I'll be looking at what is the sensible way to deal with it now I guess...)
