Summary: "Most people know that what a vegan is, however when interviewing tourists at San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf, they were stupefied by the word."<br><br><br><br><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1se0ZM6Gy8" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1se0ZM6Gy8</a><br><br><br><br>

BPS, it took me a minute to figure out that you were being sarcastic in your comment ( right?)

I was being mostly sarcastic, yes, but I do think most of the comments there were pretty jerky. Someone is not a moron, stupid, etc. because they haven't heard the term "vegan" which may be becoming common on the coasts, but certainly isn't well known in the rest of the country. It might be funny to hear people guessing, but it doesn't make them stupid for not knowing.

We heard: an Alien<br><br>
a bug<br><br>
a whistler<br><br>
a woman<br><br>
an ethnic vegetarian (wonder which country)<br><br>
and a candy bar<br><br><br><br>
Although some of the comments call the people in question "stupid", I don't think that word was used by the actual people making the video. They were just illustrating the point that people still do not know / nor have ever heard the term "Vegan".<br><br><br><br>
16 years ago I thought it (vegan) was a type of hippie. I had met "vegans" that did not shave, did not use deodorant, used drugs etc... I was repulsed by them. It's obvious to me now, that they didn't have the animal-friendly products that are available today.

I wonder how many of those "OMG those people are so stupid" commenters knew what a vegan was before they became one. I know I didn't.</div>

yeah, i remember wanting to be vegetarian...had never heard the word "vegan" before that. i am now a vegan. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/smiley.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":)"> i don't think it's cool to call people stupid for not knowing what a vegan is. not knowing the meaning of vegan is the same as not knowing the meaning of "_____"(insert word). noone is omniscient.

<span style="color:#FF0000;">I didn't know what a vegan was until recently and I've been one for years (just recently got the internet, wierd huh?) I just called myself a strict vegetarian that doesn't use any animal products.</span>

I think vegan is a relatively new term. A lot of people, especially older people use the term strict vegetarian.

I laughed when they asked that man what a vegan was, he said, "a woman." <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/laugh.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="">

I more or less expected those responses in the video. I was surprised recently when I told a 17 year old co-worker that I was vegan, and she knew what that meant. She only knew because her friend is vegan, too.
