What Exactly is a 'Slut'?

So, many people have a different view of what this word means to them and just in what context they will use it. 
What are your thoughts? 
Personally, I would never call a person a 'slut' in a serious manner. I have some silly and shock-value loving gay friends (boys) who love to call themselves 'Sluts' and so we may banter a bit but that is different. 
I really don't understand the idea of hating on a woman who appreciates and explores her sexuality and calling her a 'slut' and I truly dislike the double-standard that exists, allowing men to do as they please without earning this title. 
Thoughts?

Slut is not a term that should be use to label any woman for having sex with whom or how many men. 
It is double standard for us, women to call men a man-whore or a womanizer for sleeping around. We all know men likes to "sleep around." But when a woman has a chance to have sex with someone is not a slut. 
She is a woman of her own body and she is allow to do what she wants with it.

I think 'slut' is supposed to mean a person who has sex with a lot of different people.

These days I think most people use it jokingly with their friends, gay or straight, rather than seriously. I don't think most people take the term seriously anymore. 
It is just a word someone put a meaning on at some point in time. The meaning itself is crappy. But whether or not you let it hurt you depends on whether or not you take it seriously or not too. (or believe in the term itself).

A woman who doesn't meet the sexual standards of the person using the word. So obviously, highly subjective. Just another sign of our culture's attempt to proscribe female sexuality. 
Ditto a "nymphomaniac." A woman whose sex drive exceeds that of the man using the term. Again, women in our culture are "supposed" to less sexed-out than men. Never mind the fact that people of both genders naturally have a range of libidos, and although it's more common for men to be at the higher end of the scale, it's perfectly natural for some women to be at the high end and some men to be at the low end.

the word itself does not bother me. post slut, shoe whore, etc. 
the meaning is BS. and the best way to take away the deragatory meaning of that word is for women to stop using it as a slur against other women and to not allow that word to be used as a slur in their presence. 
I've had male friends use that word when describing a woman and believe me they heard it but good. they may think it but they won't say it, at least in front of me.

It's not a word I use because it suggests a judgement on part of someone's life that is none of my business.

I'm certain that I've been deemed "slutty" by other girls. Perhaps it's because of what I used to wear. Or the fact that I rarely wear a bra... don't know, and don't particularly care. 
I don't tend to use it as an insult. The word itself doesn't bug me. I used to lovingly refer to two of my friends as "slutbuckets". 
What bugs me is when people insult so called sluts, and act all surprised if I say I like the person. They usually mean it as in the person is promiscuous, and I wonder why the hell I should care.

I just remember that I was in a marketing class in high school... we ran the school store, planned prom, etc. The class got to have some say on who got to be in the class next year. They didn't want one girl in there because she slept with one of their boyfriends (or ex boyfriends, I don't pay attention), and I asked what the heck that had to do with anything. They kept saying that this girl had "no morals" and such. I wasn't friends with the girl, but it made me really mad.

i don't think that's the case. most of the posts here don't say that at all. 
it's how the term is used. if it's said jokingly "postslut', it's fine. if it is used in a deragatory way, then it's wrong.

slut is, yes, sexist slander against women who enjoy and partake often in sex. I pretty much will only use it to refer to men (as a joke).

To me, a slut is any person (male or female, regardless of sexual orientation) that has excessive amounts of unsafe, irresponsible, non-respectful, and non-meaningful sex. They don't respect themselves, their body or their partner. This may include someone who is having sex for vengeful purposes (out of jealousy, to become pregnant in order to "trap" their partner). Basically all these things have to be present in order for me to honestly consider them a slut. So that's not very many people that I know of....

I don't see how slut is a sexist term. I refer to males as sluts too, if the term applies. I like the term man-whore too, but usually I use that in jest. it makes me laugh, haha. 
Anyway, I don't use the word slut to refer to women/men who harmlessly sleep around. That is none of my business. I use it to refer to women/men who hurt other people because of their sex life. For example, leading someone on emotionally in order to **** them and dump them, or knowingly sleeping with or hitting on someone else's SO (unless it is a threesome I guess? lol) or that stupid game some men play where they assign "points" for whatever girl they can convince to have sex with them. Anything sexual that involves hurting or disrespecting someone else is slutty behaviour imo. I was at a bar once with my then-boyfriend, and girls would run by and pinch his ass while he kissed me. I'd say that qualifies as 'skanky', especially if they were strangers and you weren't welcoming that interaction.
