Im trying to figure out what this term means, but I havent been able to come up with a very suitable explanation. I figure it must mean one of three different things, but Im not sure which:

1). A lacto-ovo vegetarian who eats fish but does not eat mammals meat or poultry.

2). A vegan who makes an exception for fish but does not eat products originating from terrestrial animals.

3). The term is ambiguous by itself and can mean either of the two possibilities above.

Is any of the three explanations the right one, or does it mean something else entirely?

answer one works for me, with a 'tarian' on the end- pescatarians eat the same foods as vegetarians, with the exception that they also eat fish. every pescatarian i've met also consumed dairy and eggs, so two wouldn't work for me.

i'm pretty sure the pesca bit comes from an old root latin/greek/etc word for fish, or something fish related- as its also used in words like pisces.

Yeah, # 2 is actually internally contradictory; I just couldn't think of a better way to phrase it. And you're right, it comes from Latin. The Spanish verb for 'fish' is pescar.

My mums friend eats raw food only.... and raw fish.

edit: to be more specific, shes raw "vegan" apart from eating fish to be more specific. seems a bit odd to me.

I guess it means #3 since there are some people who eat fish but no products from terrestrial animals.

1. Yes it most likely means a meat-eater who avoids mammal and bird flesh.

they are omnivores who eat no other meat than fish or seafood-- so that would mean most of the food they eat is vegetarian (meat not including eggs and dairy). So they really cant say they are vegetarian-- though they will be interested in vegetarian food-- and might actually be animal activists, choosing not to believe that fish suffer "as much" pain as say, pigs.

I think "pescan" is a better term than "pescaterian" which sounds like a (wannabe)vegetarian who eats (doesn't want to give up) fish, which is contradictory. If you eat fish, you are not vegetarian.

The term "pescan" more fits someone who eats fish as their only meat. Maybe i am nitpicking. But I am tired of being told that some "types" of vegetarians eat fish. No vegetarian of any type eats fish. period.

Absolutely. Taking steps is great, and that is how we all got to where we are. But just a step doesn't constitute being a veg*n. And that was probably just pointless to say because it is basically preaching to the choir...
