For my birthday I just received a scarf and shawl from Peru (that the giver brought back from a trip.) The scarf is baby alpaca and the shawl is a blend of silk and alpaca.

Now if these were from a mainstream, US based store, I would just return them or exchange them for something else, but that's obviously not an option here. What would you do with them? Wear them? Give them to someone else? The good thing is that the giver lives far away and I don't see her very often, so she is unlikely to notice my not wearing them. She also gave me some beautiful silver jewelry, which I DO love.

Any ideas?

Hmmm... I received a leather belt from my friends family for Christmas. I don't think they understand veganism isn't just a diet. I don't know where they got it from, but I'm not going to wear it. Not sure what to do with it, actually... Maybe give it away?

I'm thinking give them away. I haven't worn any animal based items in months and don't really want to start now. I think it would be easiest to just give them away quietly. This particular person, while well-meaning, still has trouble remembering I don't eat meat after 4 years; I don't expect her to ever understand or remember all the things veganism entails.

Yeah, most people think that I'm just a health nut and that morality had nothing to do with the decision...

In general, I don't receive non-vegan gifts. Solves that issue.

If I ended up with one (such as through a 3rd party, as in the giver passed it on to someone else to give to me for them) I would give it away.

i usually donate them or regift them. you could also sell them on ebay or etsy and use the money to donate to an animal related charity.

Send them as a gift to a non-mutual friend of the person that gave it to you.

You can donate those kinds of items to PETA and they will make beds for cats and dogs out of it
