If you bought a book, and later decide that you wouldn't want other people to read it, as it might have a bad influence on them, what do you do with the book?

Bin it, put it for recycling?

Burn it?

Is the book we're talking about here "How to swallow lead while doing a bungee jump without a rope, in 12 easy steps" by Roger F. Mischievous, by any chance? I just bought all the copies from a local book store and shipped them as gifts for Tom Cruise.

There are no such thing as a inherently bad influence.

what if a book has a 5% chance of wrecking somebody's life?

Say it lead them into a cult.

ETA: anyway, is one just supposed to donate them to a charity, and then some poor sod buys them?

anyway, I'm just talking about the Arthur Janov(primal scream therapy) books, which I have become seriously doubtful about, in a lot of aspects.

Recycle the book, and hopefully it will be turned into toilet paper, then buy a recycled toilet roll and send it to the publishers making a few suggestions about what they could use it for.

Wreck it so it is unsaleable (tear off the cover for example), then donate to charity. They will recycle it and get money for that, but it won't be sold on

You don't "do" anything to "bad" books. That's what fascists do. In a free and open society, people should have free access to any information they seek, erroneous or not.

You guys are actually having a discussion about destroying literature.

Am I the only person in this thread who thinks that's the ultimate obscenity and crime against humanity?

No, I have a serious problem with it...

Who's to say it's "bad" and who has the right to make that decision for others?

That's only when the state does it. Who cares if someone wants to destroy something they own, it's not like the "literature" is now unavailable.

The owner of the book, who is in no way stopping others from purchasing their own copy.

But to start destroying literature... To me, that's a serious thing.

People destroy literature all the time.

This isn't a case of the government seizing all copies of the book and making them completely unavailable. It's one copy of one book. If my friend burns her copy of "Jane Eyre", that doesn't mean that I can't go out and get my own. It's her choice to do what she wants with her book.

They're destroying a copy not destroying literature. I've got a bigger problem with classifying anything written as literature, lol. Anywho we live in a digital age now, books are passe. Once a book goes digital there ain't no getting rid of it.

Books can be used to level wobbly furniture, as doorstops or, in a pinch, to plug air-leaks in your house. Paper is a great insulator.

I don't see a problem with it. Destroying one book isn't a big deal. I have recycled books that I didn't like before, or I write a review in on the blank pages, maybe make notes throughout the book and give it away.

I don't understand those taking issue with it though (assuming Blobbenstein isn't on a mission to eradicate every book like that in existence. Although I'm not sure that is necessarily a big deal either).

Simply because something is written, doesn't mean it's sacred.
