a sinus infection? possibly. i don't know. what are the symptoms of a sinus infection versus a cold or virus?

this is what's going on:

i woke up with a bit of a scratchy throat on friday and was a bit stuffed up. within a few hours my nose was running constantly and my sinuses were stuffed up beyond belief. it got progressively worse over the weekend and because of the whole post-nasal drip thing (is that what it's called when guck drips from the sinuses down the throat? ew anyway) and constant sniffling, i've had a bit of an upset stomach but it feels fine if i eat something.

now today it's at it's worst i think. i woke up at about 4am not able to swallow because the gland in the right side of my throat is swollen and hurts, i can barely open my mouth wide enough to eat today. right in behind my wisdom teeth on the right also there's a bit painful swollen lump, i can't figure out if it's a canker or a gland, are there glands there? or lymph nodes? i know my lymph nodes swell up and hurt when i'm fighting something off so it could be that i guess?

i have a yucky phlegmy cough and still the constant runny nose but i still feel it's consentrated mostly around the sinuses and all the other stuff is just secondary symptoms of that. feels much worse than a cold but it's not a flu cause the stomach and stuff is ok.

feel like my head is stuffed with cotton though. it's fun

maybe i have sars (kidding! kidding!)

so any ideas?

i took a sudafed sinus decongestant a while ago, it seems to have helped quite a bit with the stuffiness and runny nose, hurrah. but i'd rather not take meds if i don't have too.

i'm gonna walk over to the drug store and get some echinacea with zinc, hoping that'll help me get over it quick.

thankfully i'm not working til wednesday but i'd rather get the worst of it done by then so i don't scare my customers away (lots of our customers right now are tourists from the US, they really WILL think i have sars lol)

someone at work is just getting over conjunctivitus aka sinus infection. is that or could it be in any way contagious? i'd actually been sneezing and sniffling a lot at work as of about the same day she got sick. we figured allergies, both of us have dust allergies and someone brushed the dust off all the cieling fixtures, it could be what aggravated her sinuses to cause an infection, but it's pretty coincidental that i got sick too

ideas? help?

I get colds, flus and infections easily. My doctor gave me this method to tell if I need to see her - perhaps that will give you a better idea what it is. If you answer yes to 1 of the questions, you need to see a doctor.

1. Has the problem stayed in 1 main area for more then 3 days? (ie horrible sore throat for 3 days, some secondary problems throughout vs sore throat, then cough, then ear ache)

2. Have you had a fever for more then 2 days?

3. Is your ability to eat, swallow or breath compromised due to throat problems?

BTW, the cough and upset stomach often come with the post-nasal drip.

yeah i figured the throat and stomach was just cause of that, that's why i'm sure it's not a flu-like virus.

hmm well there's a walk-in clinic that's open evenings, if i feel any worse tonight i might pop by. doesn't cost me anything to get checked out so better safe than sorry.

the woman at work with supposed conjunctivitus said that she still felt sick after she finished her rounds of antibiotics which normally clear it up in a day or two. this is partly why i'm wondering if she had something more serious that she passed along.

i have a couple of stop gap measures but....they're kinda gross. one is a neti pot. it's a clay (usually) pot that you put warm salt water in and pour it in your nose (i kid you not!) and let it drain out....it flushes the toxins out naturally. another is for a stuffy nose and i basically the same thing only you use water as cold as you can stand it to shrink the tissues....told you it was gross

yeah i've heard of that method before actually, i think soilman's posted about it once or twice. i don't know if i could handle it because if i get any amount of water up my nose accidentally (swimming, bathing etc) my sinuses burn like crazy usually for a couple of hours.

Hmm...finished a row of antibotics and didn't feel better after a couple days? I wonder if it is a serious version of it. My Bf's ex gets sinus infections often and I remember her saying that a couple times, she had to take 2-3 rounds before it cleared up.

If you're not feeling better by this evening, have it looked at.

I have chronic sinus infections. Antibiotics are key, but you need to run the whole course. As to whether or not you have that and not something else, that's what doctors are for.

my daughter has gotten sinus infections for YEARS (she's 12) and her pediatrician explained it lke this: sinuses are like onions and have layers and when infected you have to kinda work through the layers till infection is cleared up...can take 3-4 weeks in some cases (stock up on yogurt ). I had sinus surgery when Devin was 1 (1992) and have had fewer sinus infections but....would not recommend that to anyone....lots of bruising and icky drainage

I've had two sinus surgeries... Ick. Allergies make 'em worse. I'm trying to control those better. Climate change almost always stimulates a sinus infection in me. Crazy stuff.

yeah i can tell when the weather is going to change because i either get nosebleeds, stuffy sinuses, sinus migraines, or a persistent runny nose and itchy eyes.

i don't have outdoor allergies though, only to dust.

meh.

anyway i just got back from the drug store and health food store. the drug store was useless, they have no echinacea in pill form that isn't in gelatine capsules. i found one once at another store but they didn't have them there. but i don't want to take medication so i opted for a nasal spray to help with the congestion, but the pharmacist said it won't help the post nasal drip thing.

so then i walked to the health food store and the only non gelatine echinacea had lactose in it (doh!) but i really don't like the tinctures. but on the clearance shelf i happened to spot some homeopathic stuff on sale and there was some sinus congestion and infection stuff on for under 4 bucks. so i yoinked a bottle of that. have one under my tongue as i type. also got some echinacea and vitamin c drops to suck on at work cause whenever i get sick during the last couple stages i get that really dry hacking can't speak for more than 5 minutes at a time thing.

so i think i'm set. but i do actually feel somewhat better than i did this morning so we'll see how it goes. if i don't feel better tomorrow evening i will definately go to the walk-in. my doctor also called while i was out to say there was something abnormal in my last blood test so i need an appointment. if i get in this week i'll get him to check it out

thanks for all the advice everyone

i don't take anything for my allergies. they're not bad enough to put chemicals into my body in my opinion. i can handle the runny nose, sometimes i'll take something if they're really really bad, like if i'm going through old boxes of stuff and raise up dust or if my eyes start itching on me (that drives me insane) but otherwise i leave it alone. when cleaning and stuff i usually just take breaks now and then and step outside for fresh air

but hey i'm feeling a bit better after taking that whatever it was i took lol

definately try Netti - u dont have to get a special pot u can use any pump bottle. make the water luke warm - add one teaspoon sea salt to about 500mls water, tip head forward and slightly bent put bottle on one side of nose, let water flow from one nasal passage and out the other.

it takes practise to perfect but is definately worth it.

after years of sinus problems - operations and antibiotics I find this is the only practise that saves me from days-weeks of headaches and blocked/running nose.

Yeah, I've been recommended the netti, too. I should try that. I've got so much scarring in the sinuses, it couldn't hurt.
