U.S buying 40 million worth of chicken.

Quote:

The United States is stepping in to help bail out another American industry -- chicken farmers and meat processors.

The nation's chicken industry is having a difficult year. Chicken producers are struggling with higher costs of running their business at the same time that consumers are buying less meat.

I think the good thing here is that it is noted that consumers are buying less meat. Great from a veggie point of view.
However what I see as a potential problem is that the U.S government is spending so much money to make up the difference.
How will the meat industry be brought to its knees if public demand is going to be offset with government money?
I think what actually irritates me possibly the most is that we are indirectly buying this chicken with our own tax dollars.
If the reason were to feed the troops, thats one thing, but for the government to spend that much money to offset the decrease in demand is just wrong.

I know that some on here have said that if the stores ended up throwing out enough meat because it just was not being purchased, those stores would buy less to start with and that would be a start at saving some animals.
How can this theory work if the industry is going to be rewarded by the government?

So, do you think the government should use your tax dollar to purchase chickens to offset the loss from less public demand.

This makes my blood boil and no the government should not bail out the meat industry . As many folks are finding out more how their meat and other foods are coming from, they are leary on what they buy and purchase, I think the government is wasting their money.

First, I do not support killing animals with my tax dollars. With that said, the really funny thing is that the article says that it will help raise retail prices for chicken. Why would you want to raise prices for something with slumping sales? If people aren't buying it at the price it is now, why would they buy it when it costs more??

Infuriates me too. They need to be offering subsidies for nutritious veggies. So many people can't afford those. That would hlep with the obesity epidemic and save human and animal lives.

Nobody eats a veggie diet because they are poor. Since switching to veggie, I now hear someone say they are a Veggi* and I think, this person makes a decent living.

Yes I keep on hearing when I tell folks I am a veggie, they said how can you are affording that? I ask them how can you afford to be expensive animal products?

I think there is some truth to this, altough I do know some broke veg*ns. Most of the veg*n friends that I have are mostly pretty comforatable financially. I've been a broke student on a veg*n diet and now my wife and I make a good living so I've been in both postions. I think the big exception to all veg*ns having money is college students.

I think people are realizing that a vegetarian diet is much healthier (granted that you dont live off of frenchfries or carbs) and that alone is making more people want to become veg*ns because of body image.

I know people who are veg*n because it's cheaper. I mean, as long as you're not buying all the processed stuff it is cheaper.

But back to the OP.

I don't think the government should be bailing out the failing meat industry. There's a damn good reason that it's failing. Let it.

Ironic that the fundamentalists can fight government aid for Planned Pregnancy because some could fund abortions, yet silent on killing billions (humans included) while funding the livestock farmers.

I don't see where a vegetarian diet would be expensive. Veg*ns don't need to eat more fruits or vegetables than omnivores-just sub the meat with plant protein. Really. A decent omnivore diet should include fruit and veggies!
Beans are about $2.00 lb. organic-that makes 4 to 5 cups cooked. I believe the cheapest meat is about $3.00 and serves four.

Welcome to the quagmire that is US agricultural policy. The primary purpose is to prop up producers. Hence government cheese ...

Studies of Americans show that as income, education and age increase, so does their fruit and vegetable consumption.
http://apps.nccd.cdc.gov/5ADaySurveillance/

Thats crazy. Let the meat industry fail. It would probably solve all the worlds problems well at least a fair few anyway.
