When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Did you end up doing it? Why or why not?

I wanted to be a paleontologist when I was a little kid, in my early teens I wanted to be a video game programmer, and now I have too many things to list.

Not sure why I never pursued either of those though... they still actualy sound interesting 15 years later.

a rocker/singer/songwriter/musician/performer

have been at it since age 10 and seriously at it (writing, recording, etc.) since age 16/17.

i am what i wanted to be, but fully becoming it depends on the public/audience/masses as one can make so much music/perform so much/get airplay, tvplay, etc., but the being known/heard/stardom, etc. is dependent on the listeners.

that said, fulfilment of that dream is a daily practice and everything ultimately lies in God's hands..

but one has to do one's part.

I don't really remember what my true life's desire was when I was a kid. I think for a while I'd tell people I was going to be a nurse, but that was an idea that my parents pushed on me, partly because my dad is a doctor and and partly (I'm sure) due to the sexism of the 1960's (the idea that girls could only be nurses, not doctors). At one point in my childhood, they even gave me a nurse doll (a doll wearing a nurse's uniform and carrying a little nurse's kit) to hammer home the idea.* I carried that idea all the way forward to my college years, when I took an entrance exam for nursing school. It was on the drive home from taking that exam when it suddenly hit me - I never really wanted to be a nurse, and if I passed that exam, I'd be taking a spot away from somebody who might really want or need it. That was the end of THAT career idea.

When I graduated high school, I wanted to major in history and possibly end up teaching history somewhere, but that never happened. I ended up in healthcare after all (so I guess my parents won), but as a transcriber, not as a nurse.

(No offense intended to nurses who might be reading this. I admire and respect nurses.)

*My sister was a dancer, so she got a ballet dancer doll.

Well, when I was a kid and people asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I always said, 'I want to be a mom'. Corny, I know, but true story. So yes, I am what I wanted to be! I did have other aspirations when I was in high school, like wanting to be in the peace corp, or a missionary. Since I got married at 22 and the kids came right after, I did not end up joining the peace corp or becoming a missionary!

When I was very little I wanted to be a dentist like my dad.

As a slightly older child I wanted to run off to live in the wilderness.

Later I decided I wanted to work in movie special effects, and that's what I ended up doing.

Now I want to be a farmer.

When I was really little I wanted to be an author/illustrator of children's books, a few years later I went through a pretty long stint of wanting to be a marine biologist, and then when I was 14 I decided that I wanted to be a singer. I'd been singing since I was 3 and my parents were both singers by trade, so it had never really occurred to me to consider it, as it was already such a big part of my life... but then I realized that that was all I genuinely wanted to do. I'm definitely on that track at this point, and I don't anticipate getting off it.

I wanted to be an astronaut, in specific I wanted to be a Mission Specialist on the Space Shuttle. I read and read books about it, soaked up as much as I could.

Then I realized a few years down the road, to my dismay, that I'm horribly claustrophobic. Then I had the realization that any spacecraft's interior is going to be small, and have a lot of people and equipment packed into it, so claustrophobia would probably come into play.

Then I wanted to be a forest ranger, and then somehow I decided I wanted to be a barber. Did that for 7 years, went back to college because I hated being a barber, and now I don't do anything related to any of the above.

I'm in management in a freaking restaurant. Go figure.

The very first thing I wanted to be was a veterinarian. I loved animals from the time I was very little. I started to think of other "dreams" and career fields when I realized that I may have to cut the animal, see blood, puss, etc.. for surgery and healing of wounds.

I wanted to be a cop when I was 10, then a judge (because I wanted more power.. hee hee). I tried to go back to the vet idea when I was 20, but the vet tech college I applied to said I had to have experience before I could go to their college..... WTF -- isn't it the other way around???

When I was 23 I wanted to be a Marine Science Tech. Which amounts to cleaning up oil spills and controlling oceanic environmental damage. When I joined the Coast Guard in 99 they said although I qualified for every single job they had, MST had a 2 yr wait. I chose Electronics Technician and have been happy with this career for the past 6 years.

** oh yeah, I also want to be a lyricist. I write lots of songs - solo and in collaboration (someone plays an instrument and I write words to go with it). I want my poetry published (some of it already is -- but I want it to be my own book). I want to write fiction and non-fiction. I want to run a vegan business. I want to make the world better by my presence.

I dont remember actually telling anyone that I wanted to be a nurse, but when I was about 6 or 7, I was always mixing up flour and water in syringes that my mum got from our dog's vet and giving "pretend" injections to all my dolls and teddy bears....weird

I always wanted to be a veterinarian when I was little.

I ended up starting college for computer engineering at 19 (worked a year right out of HS.) I then dropped out because one day I had an epiphany that I was going to come home and become a Vet Tech (didn't want to go through all the schooling to be a vet.) Once I got home, I realized I cry watching Emergency Vets and I'd never make it as a vet tech. So I worked crap job after crap job. Now I'm an interpreter for the deaf.
