I have been doing a lot of research on the treatment of animals in the dairy industry (and what not) as well as the beef industry's impact on the environment. I have been trying to gather as much information as I can find about all of this.

I was wondering a.) why you are vegans, b.) if you have any books or websites that might have more information and c.) what you believe about all of this.

I am mainly asking because I am new to veganism and am just curious. I realize that this is a lot, but any thing would be great!

Oh, man. I never could make it through that. The horror! The horror! I still have nightmares about the kosher slaughter of a cow that make me completely change my usage of the word kosher.

I'll make it short and sweet:

I am vegan because I believe that other animals have the same right to not be tortured or have their lives taken from them that humans do.

Also, hummus (choumos, hummous, humos, homos) is the shizz.

Agreed.

Vegans watching Earthlings is like guys watching porn. They already believe in it; all it's going to do is get them ridiculously fired up.

I originally became a vegan for animal rights issues. I was a vegetarian then one day read (I don't remember where now) an account of dairy farms written by someone who works in one. When I read that they had "affectionately" nicknamed the insemination rack the "rape rack", I decided it was time to do some more research into the dairy industry. What I found sickened me and so I became vegan.

Since becoming vegan I've also seen what it has done for my health. I was having to take synthroid every day for my thyroid and have since been able to stop taking any thyroid meds all together. I'm finally losing weight which I was never able to do before, even as a vegetarian and I have so much energy now.

I've also learned more about the environmental impact of factory farms and truly believe that becoming vegan is the best thing you can do for the environment.

Sorry, I don't really have any links for you. I just start doing google searches and reading whatever comes up. I also get a lot of links to read from various threads on boards like these. Reading fast food nation was a real eye opener as well.

For me it was like rewatching the Star Wars prequels on DVD. I already knew they were horrific suckfests when I saw them in the theater, and watching them again only served to reaffirm their supremely horrible suckiness. But it's Star Wars so I feel compelled to watch them.

And I would say that Jar Jar Binks = kosher slaughter, knowumsayin'?

Um...to get back on topic:

http://www.isawearthlings.com/

I am going to have to check Earthlings out. I really appreciate the information. The things that have really surprised me, which I hadn't actually seen figures for before, is the impact that cattle (alone) have on the environment. I can only think of a few times that I have been angier than I was when I found those disturbing facts out!

I can relate to your situation and the cruelty inflicted on animals through the dairy industry. I started out as a vegetarian and went vegan over the summer because I felt better and had more energy. Ive lost alot of weight though 135 at 6''2' and my doctor thinks i should eat dairy but the thought of the smell of makes me sick

I went vegan partly for health reasons, but mostly for the animals. Most of my reasons can be found in PeTA's Earthlings & Meet your Meat.

If you're interested in the health aspects, I suggest the book Skinny *****. I read it all in one night, and now my mom is starting on it (but I know that she won't change her diet. *sigh*). Anyway, it's a really fun read (besides the part about animal slaughter. I was in tears.) and gives great facts.

1) I am vegan because I think exploiting animals in any way is barbaric. I also believe that animals are equal to humans.

2) Websites that have helped me are the VeggieBoards, because there are Militant Vegans here and members of the Vegan Police who don't beat about the bush and call a spade a spade. Without their frank and honest talk, I would maybe still be a vegetarian and wallowing in my own hypocrisy.

3) I don't know what you mean by "what you believe about all of this". Please rephrase.

actualy, likewise, "extremist veganistic views" are pretty much what finally made me see that me supporting the dairy industry was a hypocrisy to my beliefs.

If enough people tell you "it's ok", you start to believe it. And before you know it you contribute to veal on a daily basis for 10years after giving up everything else 'cause "it's ok."

I was vegetarian originally because the idea of animals being killed for food horrified and disgusted me. When I learned that egg laying hens and their brothers/fathers/sons, and dairy cows and theirs are all brutally slaughtered just like other "food animals" as an integral step in the process of "producing" eggs and dairy products, I knew I needed to be vegan.

If I wouldn't consume a chicken pot pie, hamburger or veal chop for "ethical reasons", how could I be willing to continue funding the slaughter of those animals in the name of dairy or eggs? What I had always thought I "meant" by choosing vegetarianism, I could only practice by getting rid of *all*animal products. And once I got that, going vegan was a piece of cake.
