I don't think that's normal. When I went vegetarian, I felt better, lighter. And had more, um, output. TMI, sorry. Make sure you're getting enough protein and iron (of course). You'll find threads discussing sources of those on these boards. I hope you feel better.
I did eat all fast foods, my life style has always been so hectic and that was the easiest way to eat for me. (No I don't weigh 300 pounds)! I guess gradual is going to have to come in to play because I feel icky! I don't really want to do that but, if it will help than I have to. Thanks for the help
Since your body is so used to all the carbs and additives in junk food that you're not eating anymore, it's ok to feel tired at first. Fresh fruits are good energy boosters.. and make sure you're drinking LOTS of water. The first few weeks I was veg I drank a lot of water and my body was "rinsed" clean and I felt so much better.
DirtDeva is right, eat a lot more fruit--they'll give you a ton of energy. A lot of fresh veggies are great too. If you're feeling especially tired, make a banana/melon (or mango)/soymilk shake and that oughta give you some pep. Make sure you're getting your vitamins.
You could be going through some sort of detox, also. If you ate a lot of fast foods, your body's full of unwanted garbage and it'll take a while of eating really well before you get rid of all that crap. People who change to the Raw Diet go through a detox if they 'go raw' overnight. It'll pass. Just make sure you're getting your vitamins.
Excersise will help flush out the fast food blah's. Keep up on the water.
Thanks for all your responses. I probably am not eating enough calories now that it was mentioned. I haven't mentioned this to my Family and my Dad keeps offering me "meat" products! I weigh 110 and I have lost 9 pounds in 4 days so ya, I think I need to up my calories, he asked me if I was eating (I don't live their, but my Mom just had open heart surgery so I have been there every day helping out) I told him yes but he thinks I am trying to starve myself
Well, since I wrote the first post I figured out why I am feeling icky .....I am getting a cold
Thank you I really appreciate your help. I am sure that is why I am getting sick
Today I ate a Banana, a potato pancake, an apricot, and two pieces of pizza with the cheese peeled off. Yesterday I ate a banana and some frozen cherries, and a almond butter and jelly sandwich. Wow, I really am not eating am I??? okay, I have to start eating!!!
I'm still trying to figure out what to eat, I just went through a traumatic event with my mom and her surgery so I really have been to nervous to concentrate on eating (stupid I know) but I can't get sick for her sake. MAybe if I eat more this will go away.
Yes, you definitely need to eat more. You're eating fruit, but you need more vegetables, more protein, more whole grains, and just about more of everything else. Eat 3 meals a day, plus a snack or two.
Some suggestions: if you depend on a lot of fast food, visit the nearest health food store to you. They will have a lot of veggie frozen dinners, soup cups, pasta/rice/mashed potato cups, canned soups, deli items, etc. that will be convenient for you. You can also choose one day in the week to cook several dishes and freeze into individual portions for later. Brush up on nutrition (some good places to visit for this are www.vrg.org and www.vegweb.com ). Find some good recipes ( www.vrg.org ; www.vegweb.com ; www.vegetariantimes.com ; www.veganmania.com ; www.vegsource.com ; www.fatfree.com <-- all good places to find recipes!) You could also invest in a couple of veggie cookbooks.
You'll definitely feel better once you start eating properly. I hope you feel better soon!
I've been a vegetarian for almost a month now and at first I was a bit sluggish too. What I found to be my problem, was a lack of calories. I had the notion in the beginning that I could only eat fruits and vegetables. I also only ate three meals a day. Now I make sure I eat some starch and protein at every meal. I also don't really eat at specific times anymore. I eat when I'm hungry. Things like fruit go through your system really quickly so make sure you have food on hand a couple of hours later to fill you up again. If this doesn't help you out, it may just be your body reacting to a sudden and radically different diet. Keep it up though...and once you get over this slump, you'll feel better than you have in a long time!!
Although it may seem like you are eating alot, you probably are eating much fewer calories than you did before. You mentioned that you used to eat alot of fast food. Imagine how many calories are in a burger and fries. Then look at what you eat now, a salad and fruit. You need to eat a whole lot of salad and fruit to make up the calorie difference. Usually when I get lightheaded and weak, I eat more nuts or peanut butter, or something with alot of fat in it. It usually helps me, so maybe it will help you too.
