We need meat with every meal! Our bodies need it to live!
How do I get this stuff out of my head. I grew up thinking that because it is what I was told.Meat has never tasted good, looked good or smelled good to me. But I always ate it because my mother said it was good for us, now at 38 I try to break that habit but find myself unable to get it out of my head.

Educate yourself?
It's simply not true. It is entirely possible to get all the nutritive value that meat has from plant sources. This is a good resource to learn about vegetarian nutrition: http://www.vegsoc.org/page.aspx?pid=760

Don't worry about what people say. You can get enough protein and iron as a vegetarian! All of us here on this forum are living proof that you can live quite well without any meat whatsoever.
Hmm... if meat never appealed to you, you'll have a much easier time giving it up than many of us. Just find out about all the other things there are available to eat and you'll be fine!

You could get a conventional book on nutrition for the layman out of your local library. Hospitals in your area might be able to suggest something; they have dieticians on staff. There are some unreliable sources: I have recently seen statements that some seaweeds have vitamin B-12, and this is not true (this was on the nutrient list for something at my local health food store).
My husband and I watched a movie called Forks over Knives through Netflix which sealed the deal for us and we seriously cut out beef, chicken, pork and some fish out of our diet. It goes into the health advantages of not eating meat and the testimonials are pretty impressive. www.forksoverknives.com

Are you cutting out all fish?
Quit eating animals. Watch the documentaries. Look at everyone around you and realize we are all animals, we are all food-children and babies included. Research healthy foods and daily nutrition needs. Go to veg websites.
I don't like the look, smell, or texture of avocados, and I certainly don't eat them (even though they're pretty healthy)

Check this and think about meat at every meal:

I don't need meat to live, everytime we cooked meats since it has the hormones now I burn up and have a reaction to all meats, I rather have healthy plant base diets.
Just hang around this forum! Read some of the threads and post. Learn about nutrition. It takes a while for belief systems to change, especially if they have been around for a number of years. But they can change.

Yes. After watching the movie we slowly started adjusting to not eating meat the last thing to go was fish. That was tough for us but we did it now and feel really good about it.
Yes, simply educate yourself. Do a quick google search, you'll find many results. Veggie boards is a great resource as well, do some searching on here. There are many books you can get a the library about vegetarianism and the issues associated with it. Vegetarianism for Dummies talks a lot about what you are worried about. Once you do this, it will be easy to get it out of your head that you need meat to live, which you don't.

You are very lucky that meat never appealed to you. If meat appeals to you, it's just harder to give up. It's good that you want to become a veg though!

Good Luck!

I'm glad to hear someone else that doesn't like avocados. Even Omnis think i'm nuts for not liking guacamole!
I am a born vegetarian. I have never eaten meat during my whole life. I don't need more proof.
Regarding the iron content of food, I give blood (I haven't recently but I intend to rectify that) and every time one of them tests my blood for the iron content, they tell me it's one of the highest they've seen pretty much. And I haven't ate any meat or fish for around 6+ years.

Fears instilled in childhood are hard to shift.

I guess we all kinda cured our childhood fears of the boogie-man under the bed (I actualy had one of those, btw) by recognising such fears as childish and taking pride in growing up?

Same problem, same cure.
