Hi, I've been a vegetarian for 3 years, and I think I would like to try going vegan, starting this summer. I just had a quick question, what do you do when you need to wash your hands at school/work/other public places? Or someone elses house? Soap isn't always vegan, I know.

Thanks for your responses!

I am new (2 days) to this vegan thing and am not officially 100% vegan yet, but well on my way! I didn't know some handsoaps were not vegan. What is it they have?

You know those tiny purell containers that are meant for the purse, diaper bag, pockets, etc.? I would refill one of those with vegan hand soap to take with me, and make sure my kids each have one, instructing them to be very careful to close it COMPLETELY before putting it back in their pocket.

I use whatever's available. Maybe if there was one place I consistently washed my hands, like at work, that didn't have vegan soap, I might bring some... But I might be concerned that if your plan is to carry little vegan soap containers, and send them off with your kids, that veganism generally might come to seem too unwieldy to yourself and others (especially after the first time a little soap container came open in your kid's backback)... I think you can be a conscious and responsible vegan and not go to that level, if you prefer

Hadn't thought about that aspect of it, it would make veganism seem rather unwieldy wouldn't it? Thank you for pointing this out.

Another vote for "use the soap". At workplaces, I've always taken an extra container of liquid soap with me to keep there, since I'm washing my hands a LOT, and it's quite easy to store it.

wrt offending ingredients, there could be all sorts of stuff from tallow/glycerin/other forms of animal fat, animal based perfumes, silk, keratin, collagen, etc. etc. etc. Even if it's animal-free, it may be tested on animals. Blech.

Are you sure you have to use the work soap? Having your skin crack isn't good either, health wise. Dry, cracked skin is more susceptible to infection, etc.

At work I bring in vegan soap like the Jason brand and leave it in the restroom and everyone can use it. If I'm out somewhere I don't use soap, just hot water. Hey, I'm strict about using only vegan products. Maybe I should get a small travel container and fill it with soap I can use.
