Alright, so I'm not sure where to put this post, but I figure it will get the most attention here.

Anyway, let me just start by saying that I am a teenager, in high school, and I know from experience that teenagers are a lot more open to accept people's differences and choices nowadays than adults are. My friends didn't even blink when I told them I was vegan...well, some of them quesitoned me to death, but it was out of curiosity (I hope). There are a few vegetarians at my school that I know of, and suddenly (completely out of the blue) my school added a "veggie menu" ( Gardenburger or cheese pizza...) to my great delight. Well, getting to the point, I want to try to educate my fellow schoolmates. i mean, if I had been faced with the hard facts of the cruelty factory farming and all the benefits of veganism before, i would have become vegan MUCH MUCH sooner. Seriously. Because I was always kind of lying to myself, saying "well, they can't suffer that much, etc" but once I actually read the Vegetarian Starter Kit (which I ordered almost as a joke from PETA) I quit eating any animal products right then and there.

I KNOW that a lot of students would at least become vegetarian or try to cut back on animal products if they were informed. I mean, my best friend didn't even know what gelatin was made of for crying out loud! And she's a 16 year old straight A student! So, I think the reason more people aren't vegan is sheer, blissful ignorance. I really think I can make a difference, just handing out a few flyers. I know the teachers would let me pass them out before each class, and it would be sooo helpful!

So, my question is : Is there anywhere I can order pamphlets on veganism, that detail the health benefits (the students can show their parents) and the ethical and environmental benefits? And, er, can I order them for free? Because my mom would seriously freak and think I was taking it too far. Or she would think I was spending money on something useless. Or, better idea, if there isn't a site that sends these pamphlets for free, would anyone be willing to order some and send them my way? I mean, we are all committed vegans/vegetarians here and it would be helping and enlightening a whole new generation! I'm underage, so it's not like I can buy stuff online or write checks and stuff, or even touch my own money without parental consent (grrr). So ay advice would be greatly appreciated. I;m sure the animals would appreciate it too!

I think it's awesome that you want to hand out flyers and educate other teens about veganism and vegetarianism!

PETA is great about supplying materials for people who are motivated to make a difference, like yourself. Email them at [email protected] and tell them what you would like to do at your school. They will send you free flyers, stickers, and other supplies.

Here is their site: http://www.peta2.com/TAKECHARGE/t-peta2guides.asp

Good luck, and keep us updated on your progress!

Thanks everyone! I e-mailed PETA a few minutes ago, hopefully they'll be kind enough to send a box or two
hahahaha. I am kind of excited because I KNOW that I can at least shape some people's opinions and inspire change...and it would be great to have another vegan on campus! Hahaha....I'm in kind of in a sappy mood right now, but if I ever "make it big" as an actress (I'm working on it, lol), trust me, you WILL see me advocating animal rights and a vegan lifestyle... BIG TIME...

Thanks!

err, so I kind of dug around their website and they actually had a form to fill out for them to send you activism pamphlets, stickers, etc....I felt kind of dumb after that, but in a good way, lol.. So I filled that out and hopefully I'll get it in the mail soon. I will keep everyone posted as to how my school reacts to it

I would only give someone a flyer if they asked you about being vegan. If you start handing out flyers to random people or start preaching it, it will just turn people off to it. Think about bible thumpers and people that walk around the streets screaming about abortion or creationism, or politics, or whatever.

Obviously i think that the world would be a better place if everyone was a vegetarian or vegan, but people need to decide that for themselves.

Hahaha, no I;m not going to stand in the school commons and start yelling out about veganism! Lol, that would just be silly. No, what I mean is to hand them out at the end of class without making a big deal about it. We get handouts all the time to take home and we either choose to show them to our parents and read them or throw them away, muttering something about BS. Or even if the teachers don't hand them out, they could be like here are some hadnouts if anyone wants to take any. Or maybe work out a deal with the health teacher and have her pass them out in her classes. I'm just saying that if I had ONCE seen a hand out or had something like that available or on-hand, I would have read it. And upon reading it, I would have become vegan years and years ago. But it took me actually ordering something and getting it in the mail and reading it to become vegan. What if I had never jokingly ordered that starter kit from PETA? I wouldn't be vegan and I would still think ya'll were a bunch of freaks. And I know there are other students like me at school, animal lovers how chow down on burgers while discussing animal rights. People don't KNOW or WANT TO KNOW where their food comes from, I simply want to let them know and then it's up to them what they do.
