I would rather support local businesses. I can't stand being inside walmart, albertsons, fry's, publix, fred meyer, or any of the other huge grocery stores...just knowing what is in all that food, how the clothes are made, etc.
And I am amazed at a lot of people's laziness...i grew up in a tiny town where you went to a different shop for everything you needed, and because of that, you knew all the owners personally, ran into people you knew, and were part of a genuine COMMUNITY. There is no community anymore and many people (not all people, but many) would rather go to work, shopping for an hour at walmart, and go straight home, so they don't miss American Idol.
The corporations all started with good hearted intentions by logical, smart people, but there is no community with them, and people are blinded now...very very few people have any idea where their food, clothes, and appliances come from!
How many of you that live near walmart or in a city know where your neighbor grew up , what state your carrots come from, the name of the cashier, or how many kids the local postmaster has?
