does anyone have any reasons for not working/shopping here. like AR, ethical issues etc. a friend of mine has told me that these two (amongst others of course) are the "devil", but i have not had occasion to ask him the reasons behind this opinion. please advise me!!! not sure if this is in the right forum.

i will not shop at wallmart! one reason is their slave labor.. another is their monopoly on the market. they just suck in my opinon!

i as well referr to walmart as satan's temple followed by the water and power companies...

I don't go to Blockbuster because it's a rip-off. I don't go to the movie theatre either because I think it's too freakin expensive. The library lets me borrow movies for free, so that's what I do on the very rare occasion that I have enough patience to sit and watch a movie.

I shop at Walmart because I can get everything I need in one spot. I'm not against buying something, using it, then returning it however because Walmart is so big, they don't give a **** about me so I don't feel bad taking advantage of them. I would not do that to a privately owned store.

I haven't heard anything about them and AR issues however.

There is only one thing that I will get at Wal-Mart- Tom's of Maine mouthwash. I can get it there for $3 compared to $5 anyplace else around here, so I stock up on it when I do go there. I'm seriously considering just paying the five bucks in the future someplace else so I don't have to go there anymore, though. It's just too much of a monopoly, they treat their employees awful (which is probably why their employees have awful customer service), and they put a lot of independent, smaller stores out of business. Plus, they do not donate any of the stuff that they can't sell anymore. For example, in the warehouse I work, any produce that gets bruised or too old along with other unsellable stuff is donated to the local food pantries. Wal-mart throws this all away in their dumpsters when they could just as easily arrange to have it all donated. This is a huge amount of waste!

Besides, whenever I have been in Wal-mart, I feel like I should have football gear on to be able to shove my way through all of the rude shoppers.

So, because a company is successful means it is okay to commit fraud or steal from them? Both of which I might add contribute to higher prices that those who enjoy Wal-Mart must pay. Thanks.

I would rather support local businesses. I can't stand being inside walmart, albertsons, fry's, publix, fred meyer, or any of the other huge grocery stores...just knowing what is in all that food, how the clothes are made, etc.

And I am amazed at a lot of people's laziness...i grew up in a tiny town where you went to a different shop for everything you needed, and because of that, you knew all the owners personally, ran into people you knew, and were part of a genuine COMMUNITY. There is no community anymore and many people (not all people, but many) would rather go to work, shopping for an hour at walmart, and go straight home, so they don't miss American Idol.

The corporations all started with good hearted intentions by logical, smart people, but there is no community with them, and people are blinded now...very very few people have any idea where their food, clothes, and appliances come from!

How many of you that live near walmart or in a city know where your neighbor grew up , what state your carrots come from, the name of the cashier, or how many kids the local postmaster has?

"But I live in a city, Trav, how can I be expected to know all that?"

It's hypothetical. But look at how many people you pass on the road, bump shoulders with in a store, nod to when you accidentally make eye contact on the sidewalk or in a waiting room...

Those are people with lives, feelings, and, if you just say hello, or smile at, have the potential of being your best friend, lover, an inspiration, maybe you'll even learn something or have a deep conversation!

I'm just saying...you're alive. They're alive. You're living near each other, and at that moment are sharing the same space in life. Get to know everyone, because you can always use a friend, and they might need one.

We're well on our way to 9 billion people on earth. How many can you comfortably call up and say hello to?

well i once had a great link to why i hate walmart; however, i can not find it now. someone at vegweb posted the link, so maybe whoever it was will see this thread and post it for you.

i found these links that talks somewhat about the issues i have with walmart.

i will try to find the link that puts it in very plain english and shows actual proof as to walmarts bad business pratices.

one i remember is that in 3 world countries they make the empolyees work 12 or more hours a day and during peek season they work 16 hour days. they are paid pennies compared to americans minimum wage and then they live in a walmart dorm in rooms that are 7 feet by 7 feet, which they pay walmart to live in.

in the U.S. they make sure most employees never work enough hours to get health beneifits and tons of other stuff just like it.

walmart is suppose to be a low profit company; however, there owners and CEO's make millions. and so on and so on..

hopefully these links will have enough info for you.. i personally will not shop at walmart, but that is just my choice.

oh and i know nothing about blockbuster, but would also be interested in what others think of the company.

http://www.walmartwatch.com/

http://www.walmartyrs.com/

http://www.1worldcommunication.org/Walmart.htm

I have only been in Walmart a few times, and only once have I bought something there . It's almost TOO big in my opinion. And its true they have shoved out the smaller businesses. Lately its been strange for me to go into a huge warehouse-like store-seeing all the items and lights just give me a headache...and then I think about materialism...

Blockbuster is okay...I don't go to rent videos there or Hollywood Video very often because I'd rather save my money. I rent videos at my local library for free and I have to say they do have a great collection. I love checking out Cd's too!

You took the words out of my mouth. I started to post something like this earlier... but I had to do something so I didn't get around to it.

We don't have Wal-Mart here thanfully. Well, not yet. We do have Blockbuster though, but I've never been.

I prefer small shops, and don't care about having to go to many different places to get all I may need. I'm also honest with the small places (if they give me too much change I return it, but not with the big places).

I'd much rather go to our local video store than the huge Bluckbuster mega-plex down the road. There's something a bit sinister about all that flashing yellow neon.

Kurm, you should consider the people who work there a bit. It could be that if that cashier's register is short, that the balance may be taken out of his or her pay for the simple mistake. So, you may not be punishing the "big bad corporation" for the employee's mistake, but instead punishing a cashier trying to earn a living and who made a simple mistake.

Just something to think about.

My neighbors are still pretty new to me, but I know that the people across the street have dogs named Skiff and Mocha and the kids bike to school. My carrots are from Alaska, Rachel and Donette are my two favorite cashiers at the supermarket I frequent and Vickie is the owner of the natural food store and her son's name is Eric! As for Wal-mart, it's either that or Fred Meyer here. K-mart just closed and there really isn't much else for economical shopping options if your looking for a new blender or a sheet set. Hence the beauty of the thrift store!

haha. kurm you are funny!

i dont willingly shop at wallmart. they all seem dirtier than their counterparts (target, kmart), but i rarely shop those places either. anyway their (walmart) merchandise is too hard to find, it seems like there is a ratio of 9 children to every 1 adult in there, and just about everyone is shoving around those annoying shopping carts. they really should make ppl get licenses for those things. i dislike walmart.
