My doctor told me this week that I'm severely deficient in vitamin D. She's recommended I take 10,000 IU of colecalciferol (derived from wool) daily, but all I can find online is 400 IU. Does anyone else take a vitamin D supplement of this size, or know where I can get one? (I'd prefer it to be vegan, but as I'm pretty desperate at the moment I'll take anything.) Thanks in advance!

ETA: I'm in the UK, by the way, so anywhere that I can buy in/or delivers to Britain will be useful. Thanks!

While vitamin D is naturally present in only a few food sources, eating fortified foods and frequent exposure to UV radiation from the sun are generally sufficient to meet daily intake requirements. When intake of vitamin D is deficient, either due to restricted diet, too little sun exposure, increased excretion or impaired absorption, supplementation is necessary to prevent associated health conditions such as rickets, osteomalacia, osteoporosis, diabetes, depression, stroke, high blood pressure and some autoimmune diseases, according to the Vitamin D Council. Knowing how to take vitamin D supplements will ensure ideal absorption and help prevent the development of these diseases.

I take a vitamin D supplement in all the months which lacks a "r" in the name. The summer is short where I live, so this hasn't got anything to do with my diet. It's the lack of sunlight which is the problem.

I don't think vitamin D is sold in dosages that high (because it is thought that in healthy individuals it can lead to vitamin poisoning), but two 5000 IU capsules e.g. from the store elaine suggested would do the job. Also, lots of sunshine. (But not in the UK at this time of year though!)

Sams Club sells one that is really high...5000 I think. It's D3 though if that is a concern.

I recently purchased some D2 but haven't received it yet.

I did a lot of research on it. D3 is generally not vegan but there is 1 kind derived from lichen. D2 is vegan. So I read, anyways. FWIW

You can also get those Vit-D dosages as shots here in the EU, they're in an injector which you use to inject your drink with it.

I have used them when I was severely deficient in vit D due to my past of depression and panic attacks which caused me to stay home all the time. They work fine, and have an anise-like flavour. It isn't very bad.

Now I keep my levels in check by taking a daily supplement and I also got a job that requires me to walk outside for about 3 hours a day. I can recommend that as a natural way to get your levels up again

I bought Vegan D2 from a supplier here in the US. Realistically, D2 isn't quite as well absorbed as D3 is. It's not horribly different, but there is an absorption difference.

Oh, it is sold that high, at least in Germany on prescription. 20000 IU Cholecalciferol with the brand name of Dekristol.

And what does this have to do with Vit D3?

I remember a lady from Libya, who fully covered herself (hijab) because of religious reasons, and she was taking D3 as a fluid. You would at least avoid gel capsules, which isn't vegetarian.

In NY i found one place that has 10,000 IU but only one out of dozens. Your best bet would just be to order it or find one thats like 5,000 and take two

I'm curious as to why your doctor didn't just prescribe this for you since you need such high doses? I recently had to go on VitD due to super low levels. I was prescribed 50,000IU since getting that in stores isn't really an option...
