Hi everyone...I am completely new to veganism. I basically went from being a total omnivore to being a vegetarian to being a vegan in about a month. I feel sick to my stomach. This sounds strange but I feel like I have an emptiness in my abdomen. I'm only two days off all animal products. Do you think this is normal? My sis became a vegan a few months ago and she never had this. I tried to sit down tonight and have my usual evening snack (some chips) and I just couldn't get it down. First, congratulations on going vegan! That's excellent.<br><br>
Do you mean chips in the British, or U.S. sense?<br><br>
It can be normal to experience some upset with quick changes in diet (even from unhealthy to healthy- one's body gets accustomed to things). Animal products are also addicting in many ways, so you may be feeling some of that.<br><br>
Try to eat some more substantial and high-protein vegan food. Nuts and whole grains are usually pretty easy to tolerate.

Possible causes of your troubles:<br>
- stomach virus<br>
- allergy (you might be sensitive to wheat or soy)<br>
- stress<br>
- sadness (perhaps related to why you went vegan?)<br>
- ulcer, GERD, etc. (possibly exacerbated by certain acidic foods)<br>
- other<br><br>
If it lasts for more than a week and/or comes with a fever then you should probably go visit a doctor.<br><br>
On the transitioning to vegan issue: take it slow. Start by simply removing the animal products you like least and will not miss. Next, start experimenting with vegan recipes and find a few that you really like a lot. Use those recipes to replace meals where you normally eat nonvegan foods. This should take a few weeks or even a few months if you need more time. Then build up your vegan days one by one without any requirement that those days be consecutive. When you get to 30 give yourself a reward. Next up, try for 30 consecutive days.<br>
And remember that if you relapse, it doesn't mean the end of anything. It just means a minor set-back that you can recover from and start anew again.<br><br>

I totally get where you're coming from. I think that animal protein and lactose tend to fill us up in a different way than plant proteins. For me, it feels different to get full on plants than it does on meat. Your body still hasn't gotten used to the change either so it could take a bit. When I went vegan, I had a bad time, it was like I was coming down off a drug. (even though I've never done drugs lol) After about a week or two, though I felt a lot better and my body accepted it.<br>
Just hang in there for a bit and things will get better!!

I agree..during the transistion from meat eater to Veggie I experienced a hollow sensation in my stomach which lasted a couple of weeks. I think it was the gradual release from the permanent 'bloated' feeling which arises from high intakes of animal protein. After this I began to feel lighter and less sluggish. The move from Veggie to Vegan was virtually seamless.<br><br>

Vepurusg, I mean in the American sense....I usually eat a few potato chips at night. Yesterday was horrible. Tonight, while I'm not really sick, I just seem to not really feel like munching. I've eaten tons of beans today. Maybe that's the reason.<br><br>
ElaineV, I think you have a really good point. It may be something else entirely and I'm blaming it on the vegan diet. Today I actually feel a bit better. I still do have a lot of animal products in the house that I am debating whether or not I should eat, because I know some of them the rest of my family never touches. I really don't want anything going to waste.<br><br>
TapatioQueen & HappyHippy, thank you for sharing your experiences and for the encouragement. This diet is so limiting, that I think I'll be coming here a lot to keep it up!<br><br>

Oh, I would recommend avoiding too many chips; there's a tendency to replace meat with convenient junk food sometimes, and that might be part of it (things like that can kind of sabotage efforts at getting a healthy routine going). Try for more substantial foods, and just re-introduce chips and such after you establish a regular healthy diet and are eating enough otherwise.<br><br>
The beans sound great, though. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/smiley.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":)">

congrats margaret! it's always hard to make a huge diet change rapidly and might take your body a while to adjust. just make sure to eat plenty...eating mostly fresh produce and whole foods will mean u will get less calories per the same amount of food as before.

Thanks Yumi. I've never been a big lover of leafy greens, but I will eat Romaine lettuce. I'd really like to be able to get an adequate amount of spinach in my diet.

YES the same for me. I was vegetarian for 20+ years prior to going vegan and even the same thing happened to me and once and a while still occurs. I definitely felt that my body was releasing a lot of bloating going on and products perhaps stuck in my system. After a month or two the feeling turned into a lot of energy. Just remember to do your research on vegan nutrition. It is very important. There are junk food vegans too that can load up on processed foods, white pastas etc and be even more unhealthy than a person consuming animal products. And like ElaineV mentioned don't be hard on yourself! Cheers glad to hear you made the transition, you rock!!

Actually I'm having exactly the same problem. I think actually the reason is that when you go vegan abruptly from an omnivore diet, you suddenly get way more fibers which your stomach has to digest. And when it's not used to it, it might hurt a bit and feel as if its "empty". Even before I was vegan, when I ate large amounts of green veggies and fruits I would get a slight tummy ache. Because once you have to eat till you're full in vegan foods, the biomass you consume is larger too, so once again more work for your stomach. It helps for me to also eat more refined grains with high levels of starch like rice, potatoes and vegan pasta, it gives a lot of energy and is digested easier.

If you feel that a vegan diet is limiting and therefore challenging, perhaps pick up some vegan cookbooks, look online for some vegan potlucks near you, and start experimenting on making your old-favourites in a vegan friendly way?? I found the exact opposite when I went vegan - it opened ALL KINDS of doors for foods I would have never branched out and tried. I was used to my same meat-and-potatoes diet, or fast food, or whathaveyou - the easy things I knew how to make. When I went vegan I became a major foodie, wanting to try all kinds of new dishes, styles of foods, and ingredients.<br><br>
Try to have a positive outlook, it can only help! If you focus on the "restrictive" nature of veganism it will surely feel like a challenge. Perhaps revisit the reasons why you went vegan in the first place - animals? environment? health? spirituality? all of the above? - it's a wonderful way of life, and is sustainable for the long haul - but it's important to see the great adventures in the kitchen that will be coming your way.<br><br>
If you need help, have any questions, want assistance in veganizing your fave recipes, you name it - please post!!<br><br>
