So I went to VeggieFest 2013 in Naperville today, west side of Chicago. Really nice time and some super vendors although I really think they could cut back on the number of chiropractors and yoga center booths. I got to sample some terrific products and had delicious vegan sushi, more than my fair share of lemonade, and a green smoothie that I think I'll dream about tonight.
I had hoped to sit down in a demo with Karen Calabrese, a famous vegan chef with two restaurants here in Chicago but apparently she goofed on the dates and was a no show. On the plus side a raw chef, Cherie Sofia, stepped in and gave an impressive impromptu talk on balancing and building flavors without fats. Plus she had a booth and I had some more one on one time with her and I wound up purchasing her Raw Food for Dummies book which she was kind enough to offer to sign for me. I also sat in on a demo by Miyoko Shimmer and making artisan vegan cheeses but due to lack of seating and standing in the hot sun I left early and didn't taste her samples. That's the price you pay for the big name chefs. Get there early I guess.
Anyway, if anyone was near enough to go and was wondering if it was worth it, I'd give it an enthusiastic yes. Nice experience, well planned, and nice people.
