Champion athletec Colin Jackson has enraged vegetarians by saying that

everyone should eat meat to remain at their physical peak. His

comments came after he took part in a month-long experiment for a BBC

TV programme .

...

'I definitely think vegetarians are weaker,' Jackson said, after

taking part in the TV series The Truth About Food. 'I could see I'd

lost a little bit of muscle on my arms and shoulders. When I had to do

tests afterwards, I knew I'd lost power.'

Asked whether vegetarians should eat meat, Jackson was emphatic.

'Definitely. They should have some type of meat whether it's fish or

actual meat. Human beings are omnivores.'

The study, which will be broadcast on BBC2 on Thursday at 8pm, also

asked six vegetarian sportswomen to eat meat to see how their physical

performance changed compared with a control group who continued eating

a vegetarian diet.

I think people have asked this before wrt another study, but: where did they find six vegetarians willing to eat meat?

Well if they're vegetarian for health reasons and not predominantly ethics, then I guess it can't be too hard to switch to meat for awhile. I wouldn't do it, myself, because I don't fall into that category.

As for this, just because he lost some muscle isn't a sure indication that vegetarianism makes you weaker. It's quite presumptuous of him to say that. He might not have been eating right, for one. He didn't seem too clued up when he became veggie, but I didn't see all of it.

By the way, on BBCFour (I think!), there's going to be a programme that explores the meat industry and where your meat really comes from. I won't be watching it though.

In a pair of totally unrelated (and old) stories, vegan Scott Jurel wins 2005 Badwater Ultra-Marathon and breaks the time record for the 135-mile race. Also, professional wrestler and vegan Austin Ares wins (or to be more realistic, is awarded) the ROH title for his athletic prowess.

Meat-eaters are dying of heart attacks by the millions; why not address a real problem?

because then everyone might realize that eating animals isnt good, and that no one should eat flesh. but thats just too much to ask of stupid ignorant humans.

articles like these just inspire me to work out harder at the gym. I am stronger than many of my meat-eating friends as it is. Vegetarians will have the last laugh

As for veggies being weak, why is it that the meat eaters are dying from strokes, heart disease and bowel cancer? Maybe that athlete can tell us how wonderful it is to eat meat when he is buried 6 feet down and we are the new centarians defying the lifespans!

My teenage daughter spoke her mind in a Nutrition class at school when they claimed veggies were weak and deficient in iron and protein. She told them that her mum is proof that they are wrong. I am a healthy weight, have low blood pressure, am somewhat toned (not weak) from my work, and look young for my age. I am not deficient in anything.

I was going to post a link to VBB, but you beat me to it!

The guy is clearly an uneducated twit. I'm a certified PT and somewhat of a gym rat and there is absolutely no sane, scientific basis for his conclusion other than lack of information.

How silly.

I'm a 19 year old vegetarian female... i can win arm wrestles with my 21 year old meat eating boyfriend and his mates!! I lift big tubs of water at work.. my arms are muscley (and i don't really like them like that! But they have a use!)

Anyone who tries to tell me vegetarians are weak, get laughed at.

There are too many variations of a vegetarian diet for this study to hold any water. A vegetarian lunch could be white flour pasta with heavy alfredo sauce and iceberg salad, or it could be a bean and veggie stir-fry over quinoa with a mixed greens salad. Similarly, an omnivorous diet could be baked salmon with veggies and brown rice, or it could be a hamburger and french fries. It is ludicrous to say that meat makes you stronger when there are zero controls for these factors!

The annoying part is that people will look at this article and it will reaffirm their misconception that vegetarians are weak and unhealthy and they will feel good about continuing to eat meat.
